Cars are a part of our everyday lives, so they naturally make their way onto the big screen. Here, they serve not only as a means of transportation for the characters brought to life by various actors but also as an advertisement for the automakers who often generally pay for the honor or sometimes donate high-value vehicles. What has Oregon Film been up to? – After assuring our industry worked so well through the turbulent pandemic period with several projects of all sizes, 2022 started off with a slow down. Needless to say, Oregon is still attractive and a great place to bring your creative production. Recently we worked with the state legislature and partners like the OMPA and the IATSE and SAG-AFTRA unions to increase the film and media cash rebate percentages from 18% to 25%. This morning the 2022 Cannes Film Festival announced its Official Selection. We are excited to see #OregonMade, A24’s “Showing Up” nominated in the main competition group. “Showing Up,” was directed by Kelly Reichardt, written by Reichardt and Oregonian, Jonathan Raymond, and produced by Oregonians, Neil Kopp, Anish Savjani and Vincent Savino (see all cast and crew here).

Portland plays a prominent role in this 1990’s caper centered around Timber Baron Ryan O’Neal having “lost his keys” and worrying about the contents of a safe deposit box. The Eastern Oregon Film Festival will celebrate its twelfth year of programming independent cinema in La Grande, Oregon on October 21-23. The festival will present 52 films over the course of the three days, both in-person and also via a virtual streaming platform. The official selections were announced on August 15th, and include 12 Feature-length films and 40 shorts in a variety of styles, formats, forms, and content. We are finally seeing the light at the end of a very long tunnel for many of us. This doesn’t mean the work is done or there won’t be challenges and changes going forward, but it does mean that we are starting to see more opportunity and more creativity in all areas of our industry here in Oregon.

Crunchy Pictures is currently wrapping up post-production on their new musical comedy thriller, HELLO FROM NOWHERE. The project is directed by Anthony Orkin, and stars Summer Rain Menkee, John Armour, Denah Angel, G. Scott Brown, and Sean Paul Ross. It will be released in late 2021.
HELLO FROM NOWHERE is set in the woods of Oregon, filmed at the beautiful Camp Baldwin, a Boy Scout camp on the eastern slope of Mt. Hood. Set to the jaunty melodies of an imaginary Gilbert & Sullivan musical, the film follows two couples who embark on a camping trip and meet a stranger who says he’s hiking to Canada.
