OregonLive Details Popular Oregon Film Trail And Economic Benefits Of Set-Jetting

Today, Kristi Turnquist (OregonLive) shone a light and some insight on “set-jetting” (film tourism) in Oregon with two pieces; one on the popularity of the Oregon Film Trail, and the other highlighting the important economic benefits of film tourism for the state.

Last year, Expedia announced that its research showed that set-jetting would be an increasing trend to watch in 2023 and confirmed that “streamed movies and TV shows are now the top sources of travel inspiration (40%), outpacing the influence of social media (31%).

Guillermo del Toro: Crafting Pinocchio – Coming To The Portland Art Museum June 10th

The Portland Art Museum will be hosting the Guillermo del Toro: Crafting Pinocchio exhibit this summer. The exhibit is “a celebration and exploration of the inventiveness, passion and artistic cooperation that goes into making a cinematic vision come to life.” The exhibit started at MoMA in New York and is now opening at the Portland Art Museum on June 10th and will run through September 17th, 2023.

Portland Post-Production Grant Program Winners Announced

The Portland Film Office, in partnership with Travel Portland, has announced the recipients of its 2023 Portland Post-Production Grant Program. Selected from a pool of 32 applicants, four local filmmakers will receive $7,500 each for their respective projects.

The grant program is intended to support the professional development of local Portland filmmakers by providing funds for such activities as sound, picture editing, color matching, color grading, closed caption, tech specs for distributors, and music clearances using local post-production houses.

Grants encourage the completion of a local feature-length film and position local producers to build toward larger, more resourced productions.

PAM CUT: Artist in Residency Program Now Open for Applications

A program designed to enable mid-career and emerging artists working in film, audio storytelling, immersive realities, performance, animation, etc, the opportunity to develop or continue working upon a new project utilizing resources available to them through PAM CUT including classroom space, gear, marketing, professional support, and an opportunity for exhibition.

Each residency lasts for 3 months and the artist will receive a $2500 stipend.

Join PAM CUT as we welcome the Head of Business and Legal Affairs at Academy Award-winning ShadowMachine, Rosemary Colliver as she discusses the very pertinent and important production contracts, how to properly create one, and what to be aware of to keep your creative project safe. Coming along for the ride is Academy Award-winning producer Melanie Coombs (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Harvie Krumpet) to help provide further insight with real-life experiences to help participants better understand the importance and necessity of these contracts.

Portland Art Museum’s PAM CUT // Center for an Untold Tomorrow announces the honorees for the fourth annual Cinema Unbound Awards. Honoring artistic innovators not content to be contained, the annual Cinema Unbound Awards celebrate multi-faceted folks working at the intersection of art and cinema who are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.

Working at the intersection of art and cinematic storytelling in all its forms, this year’s recipients Fred Armisen, Guillermo del Toro, Gregory Gourdet, Jon Raymond, Jacqueline Stewart, and Tessa Thompson will be honored at an in-person event at the Portland Art Museum in Portland, Oregon on June 22, 2023.

#OregonMade “Marda’s Gift” to Air on OPB

Oregon Public Broadcasting TV is devoting a full program slot to the #OregonMade documentary MARDA’S GIFT @ 9:00 PM PACIFIC Monday, May 1.

This film has won many awards including Best Inspirational Documentary and Best Female Director in a Documentary at the Morgana Film Festival. Morgana is an online festival that exists to “help indie filmmakers be seen and let their projects have the spotlight they deserve.” This is in addition to the Best Oregon Film and Finalist, Best Documentary Film awards from the Oregon Short Film Festival.

“Sam Now” to Screen in Portland Prior to PBS Release

There will be two theatrical screenings of the #OregonMade documentary SAM NOW in Portland on May 2 and 3. These screenings will directly precede the national PBS release of the film on PBS/Independent Lens May 8.

What do two film-obsessed brothers do to solve a family mystery? Using every video format imaginable, they make a movie as they travel thousands of miles looking for their missing mom. Stitching together 25 years of home videos and filling the gaps in the archive with play, SAM NOW is a mosaic of love, longing and loss, as well as an attempt to overcome intergenerational trauma.

Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting On Two Fronts will be broadcast nationally on PBS June 12th at 10pm ET and as part of a Juneteenth special for WORLD Channel’s series ‘Local, USA’ on June 19th at 8pm ET.

The iconic Buffalo Soldiers fought on two very different sets of front lines: military conflicts abroad and civil rights struggles at home. Though the 14th Amendment promised citizenship in exchange for enlistment, Black men were denied this right due to Jim Crow laws. The award-winning documentary, Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting on Two Fronts, explores the profound and often contradictory roles played by Black soldiers in the United States military.
