“Grimm” has made Portland home for 7 years, hired around 1,000 people (80 percent of the crew have been local, and about 250 full time crew), spent a little over $55 million each year, and has helped many vendors and support businesses expand in equipment and employees, as well as showcase Portland’s varied locations. Tomorrow night sees “Grimm“‘s last season premiere – we will all be sad to say goodbye to the show’s quirky and murky portrayal of Portland’s fictitious underbelly, the real city locations, the Wesen, the Police precinct, and the many character actors and stars alike. Six seasons, seven years in the making, and well over 100 episodes later, “Grimm” is set to come to an end, but it leaves behind a healthy and successful legacy of collaboration between the city, NBC, the many crew members, special effects houses, extras, and literally hundreds of local services and vendors. My company, Portland Store Fixtures, is exactly what it sounds like: we rent and sell store fixtures. (In Portland.) We stock mostly used so we have a lot of interesting oddities, but the basics of our business are shelving units, showcases, clothing racks, cash counters, mannequins, display forms – everything you need to make a store look like a store.
The majority of our revenue comes from selling fixtures to retail establishments, and most of our rentals are to clothiers, jewelry designers, and other retailers who just need a rack or a mannequin for a one-day event like a convention or a festival. With the advancements in LED lighting fixtures and HMI ballasts, controlling light fixtures with DMX signals has become both easier and much more precise. These advancements have ushered in new possibilities for control which is both quicker, easier and more economic than ever before.
While DMX control has been common in Theatrical settings for quite some time, only recently has advances in fixture design made this practical for TV/Film sets. Local Portland Prop Master, Tim Oakley, gets a well-deserved spread in AboutFace Magazine’s summer issue as a featured artist this month. Oakley (Oakley Design Studios) designs and creates intricate props, logos and set designs for features, TV and commercials. Most recently Oakley has created some of the iconic props for local Oregon shows such as “Grimm”, “The Librarians”, “The Green Room”, and others such as “”Dark Knight Rises”, “Start Trek” (1 and 2), “Indiana Jones” and “Jurassic World”, amongst many others.
