LAIKA, the Visit Downtown Campaign, Wild in Art, and OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital all joined forces to bring Coraline’s Curious Cat Trail to the Rose City this summer. Selectively chosen artists hand painted each one of the 31 almost six-foot-tall cat sculptures that were stationed throughout Downtown Portland. The trail corresponded with the release of LAIKA’s remastered, Oregon made 3D stop-motion feature “Coraline” in celebration of the movie’s 15th anniversary. Nina Oberlin is the owner of Shadow Streak Productions, a freelance set builder, animator, puppeteer, puppet-maker, and the artist the Oregon Film Trail sponsored to design a unique cat on the LAIKA and Downtown Portlands’ Coraline’s Curious Cat Trail. Nina brings a talented, unique skill set to this project. We caught up with her while she was hand painting “Cat Usher”.

Here at the Oregon Film office, we often get the question: “What do you do?” Well, the best answer is “a lot” but that isn’t sufficient to really capture all the work that goes on in this office. So let’s break it down.

The Oregon Film office has the mandate to oversee the economic development of the film, television, interactive, animation, and commercial industries in Oregon – with projects and producers that are living and working within the state, as well as projects and producers that are looking to bring their shows from outside of Oregon. Oregon is featured in more than 500 films, and a project by the state film office is marking movie locations with informational signs.

Baker County has three signs, all dedicated to the 1969 musical “Paint Your Wagon,” which was filmed here in 1968.

The markers can be found outside Baker Heritage Museum, 2480 Grove St., inside the lodge at Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort, and outside the city hall in Richland, once the ground thaws (this one will eventually be placed at Richland’s future playground).

What has Oregon Film been up to? – After assuring our industry worked so well through the turbulent pandemic period with several projects of all sizes, 2022 started off with a slow down. Needless to say, Oregon is still attractive and a great place to bring your creative production. Recently we worked with the state legislature and partners like the OMPA and the IATSE and SAG-AFTRA unions to increase the film and media cash rebate percentages from 18% to 25%. Oregon’s Film & Media Incentive Program Increases

Thanks to the passing of SB1524 in the short 2022 legislative session, the rebate percentage allowances for the “Oregon Production Investment Fund” (OPIF) have been increased in an effort to keep Oregon competitive with other similar programs in the region. Gov. Brown signed the bill into law this week and the increased rebate percentages will become available to productions on July 1.

SB1524 increases the in-state labor rebate from 10% to 20% and the rebate for goods and services bought or rented from Oregon vendors from 20% to 25%. Continue reading... “Oregon’s Film & Media Incentive Program Increases”
