RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARCHIVE: Gravity Falls (2012-2013, 2014-2016)

This week we shift gears in the RotLA world and it takes us down a path that isn’t necessarily #OregonMade, as we would always prefer, but #OregonSET. There’s many a great project that is set here in Oregon but has not brought itself to actually produce its content in this great state – Springfield-set The Simpsons comes to mind but the much-anticipated I, Tonya also rounds out that particular out-of-state-produced-but-set-in-Oregon pack. Raider/Contributor Phil Oppenheim makes the compelling argument that even those projects that do not exist as so-called brick-and-mortar operations here in Oregon, have a lasting impact on our state (and read to the very end for some great connected places to visit here in Oregon). Raiders Of The Lost Archive – Back To School With “Up The Creek” (1984)

This week we take a creek less traveled to the center of the state and explore a comedy that only the 1980’s could’ve created and then the rest of history has somewhat ignored. Along the way we connect the dots between an Astoria artist, the cast of “Animal House,” “Ghostbusters,” “Hill Street Blues,” and “Porky’s” and throw in a creator of “Grimm” for good measure, all the while never taking our eye off that wet and wild…creek: the Deschutes River. Netflix Dramedy, “Everything Sucks”, Shooting In Oregon City

“Everything Sucks”, a high school coming of age dramedy, set in the late 1990’s Oregon, is currently shooting in Oregon City.  The Netflix series will shoot 10 half hour episodes here in Oregon over the coming weeks.

“Everything Sucks” was created by Ben York Jones, and Michael Mohan, and is being produced by Midnight Radio, and is described as a, “quirky, funny coming-of-age story that follows two groups of high school misfits, an A/V club and a Drama club who collide in 1996 Oregon.”  Continue reading... “Netflix Dramedy, “Everything Sucks”, Shooting In Oregon City”

Oregon Film – Who We Are & What We Do!

As we move into another busy production season and a new fiscal year, we wanted to proactively answer a few questions about the Oregon Film & Video Office, a/k/a/ The Governor’s Office of Film & Television, a/k/a Oregon Film.

That’s us.

Did you know this office was “founded” in 1968 by Gov. McCall as a way to help better organize the needs of the film “Paint Your Wagon” that was in the throes of shooting in Baker County? Continue reading... “Oregon Film – Who We Are & What We Do!”

The recently-launched SmashTheHive Studio in SE Portland has just debuted its first production —the “My American Waistline” animated comedy series. This fearless, unapologetic and politically-incorrect collection of bite-size shorts leaves no muffin top unturned or moob unchafed in its unsparing quest to expose America’s fixation on over-eating, under-eating, ripped abs, apple bottoms and surgical enhancement.

The project is the brainchild of SmashTheHive founder and award-winning sound designer Jason Edwards, whose credits include ten independent features, numerous animated shorts and three major network television series. via VFX/PDX – A VFX/CG/Post Job Fair – Coming Monday 3/20 @ CENTRL (east)

As Grimm fades to black, it’s hard not to get a little nostalgic considering the massive contribution to our local VFX scene. But this also signals a call to action and the need to pull together quickly, to keep as many of the dozens of Ex-Grimm artists here and gainfully employed as possible.  Local studios, agencies, and other companies operating in the VFX/CG/Post/Game space are on baord.

Next Monday, March 20, from 5-7pm at co-working space CENTRL (Eastside), VFX/PDX presents “A Very Grimm Happy Hour.” Continue reading... “via VFX/PDX – A VFX/CG/Post Job Fair – Coming Monday 3/20 @ CENTRL (east)”

Portland Store Fixtures – Propping Up The Film & TV Industry

12132572_10153947139916874_6298689688665635448_oMy company, Portland Store Fixtures, is exactly what it sounds like: we rent and sell store fixtures. (In Portland.) We stock mostly used so we have a lot of interesting oddities, but the basics of our business are shelving units, showcases, clothing racks, cash counters, mannequins, display forms – everything you need to make a store look like a store.

The majority of our revenue comes from selling fixtures to retail establishments, and most of our rentals are to clothiers, jewelry designers, and other retailers who just need a rack or a mannequin for a one-day event like a convention or a festival.
