The Historic Oregon Film Trail has officially begun!
The Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce and the Oregon Film Office developed the initial concept of the Historic Oregon Film Trail (HOFT) and identified Astoria movie locations, in partnership with the Oregon Film Museum, that represent the beginning of the Trail. The Oregon Coast Visitors Association provided additional funding and support for the signs.

Thomas Del Ruth, ASC, was honored and celebrated at the Tower Theatre, Bend, last week, for his outstanding cinematography and contribution to “Stand By Me”, and was presented with a plaque by Tim Williams, Executive Director of Oregon Film. “Stand By Me” was based on a novella by Stephen King (“The Body”), and written by Raynold Gideon and Bruce A. Evans, and directed by Rob Reiner. The film shot in Brownsville, and this summer celebrated its 30th anniversary. #OregonMadeShows Exibit
In collaboration with PDXART, and many other partners (please see list below) a new exhibit is up on Concourse E, at the Portland International Airport this week. The exhibit showcases “vignettes” of artifacts, props and images from just a few of the 400+ feature films & television shows that have utilized Oregon as their production backdrop over the years. From the early silent era films like “Fisherman’s Bride” (shot in Astoria, 1908), to “Grimm”, the popular NBC television series currently shooting in Portland, Oregon has played an important role in production. The love for the beauty and magnificence of Oregon as a destination continues – this week the New York Times travel section reported that Travel Oregon’s “Seven Wonders” campaign (Wieden + Kennedy), coupled with the “Wild” movie locations tie-in, increased Oregon’s tourism “by nearly 10 percent growth in statewide lodging revenue in 2014 over 2013, an increase of more than 120,000 social media followers, and a record number of unique visitors to its website”.* Travel Oregon partnered with Oregon Film on three distinct aspects of the “Wild” journey;
June 4th, in conjunction with Oregon Film, Fox Searchlight, Travel Oregon, Travel Southern Oregon and the Lake County Chamber, and with special thanks to Susan and Kevin Samples, the last of the Oregon “Wild” screenings will take place at the Alger Theatre in Lakeview. Congratulations to Nancy Haecker (“Wild“), who, at the second annual Location Managers Guild of America Awards, won for “Outstanding Locations in a Contemporary Film”. The awards took place at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills on Saturday night.
According to Variety, Haecker read Cheryl Strayed’s memoir, “Wild”, during a flight, and was so enthused that she wanted to scout the film project. Even though most of the film plays for California, around 60 locations in Oregon were scouted by Haecker; from the high desert in central Oregon, the city of Ashland, Crater Lake, the Portland metro area, to the Bridge of the Gods in the Columbia River Valley Gorge. It seemed fitting that Fox Searchlight’s “Wild“, special-screened in four Oregon cities the second week in December. The screenings kicked off with the Oregon premiere of the movie at Cinema 21 , Portland. Reese Witherspoon (nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress), Laura Dern, Jean-Marc Vallée , and of course local Portlander and inspiration, Cheryl Strayed, were on hand to introduce the movie to a packed house, as well as an introduction from Tim Williams, Oregon Film’s Executive Director.
