#OregonMade Film Series: Angelina Jolie in “Foxfire” – March 2

Before Lara Croft, before MR. & MRS. SMITH, even before GIRL, INTERRUPTED, Angelina Jolie came to Portland to appear in one of her earliest films. She makes a dramatic entrance to save Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis from a predatory high school teacher in this poignant adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ story. Suspended after a handwritten note goes viral in the pre-Tik Tok days, Jolie’s Legs Sadovsky brings together a disparate group of young women in an abandoned house in mid 1990’s Portland.

Oregon Media Arts Fellowship – Now Open for Applications

The Oregon Media Arts Fellowship is a biannual award provided by the Oregon Arts Commission and overseen by the Portland Art Museum’s Center for an Untold Tomorrow (PAM CUT) for outstanding achievement and creativity in the field of media arts in the state of Oregon.

Applications for fellowships will be accepted from
January 30 – March 31, 2023

Call for applications: NWDoc college doc program now open

Calling all Oregon student filmmakers! We welcome filmmakers from colleges across Oregon to apply for the 2023 NW Documentary shorts program in collaboration with Portland State University’s InventOR program.

What is the InventOR documentary program?

Through the InventOR documentary program, students will create short films about an InventOR team at their school or surrounding area. InventOR is the state’s only college-level prototyping competition that empowers students to see themselves as innovators and take their ideas for inventions from concept to reality.

#OregonMade “Who Are You People” Comes out on Feb. 24

Fresh off of her appearance in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, rising star Ema Horvath is taking on a more personal role with the coming-of-age drama Who Are You People. Horvath leads the film as Alex, a 16-year-old who gains more perspective on her life as she learns of the circumstances that surround her. After her parents interrupt her attempt to seduce her teacher, she seeks out her biological father Karl (Devon Sawa) whom her parents had always kept secret from her.

Outdoor Adventure Film Grant Now Open for Submissions through Feb. 17

A new $20,000 to $25,000 grant is now open for submissions through the #OregonMade Creative Foundation. Submissions for the 2023 Outdoor Adventure Film Grant will be accepted through 5p on February 17, 2023.

The Outdoor Adventure Film Grant ’23 (OAFG23) aims to help support and amplify stories and storytellers (both in front of and behind the camera) utilizing Oregon’s outdoor spaces as a backdrop. The OAFG23 specifically invites experienced BIPOC filmmakers and on-camera subjects that can create a short film pitch that should be able to inform, inspire, capture and/or reveal a personal journey involving an outdoor pursuit that is set against the backdrop of Oregon’s majestic landscape.

A new #OregonMade feature film is coming to Amazon Prime next month.

Workaholic TV producer Ally (Alison Brie) faces a major professional setback, which sends her running to the comforts of her hometown. She spends a whirlwind evening reminiscing with her first love Sean (Jay Ellis), and starts to question everything about the person she’s become. Things only get more confusing when she discovers Sean is getting married to Cassidy (Kiersey Clemons), whose confidence and creative convictions remind Ally of who she used to be.

“Breakup Season” to Begin Production in Eastern Oregon

The #OregonMade dramatic feature, “Breakup Season” is set to shoot in, and around, La Grande and Pendleton, in February 2023.

Twenty-something Ben brings his girlfriend Cassie to his rural Oregon hometown for Christmas. Upon arrival, an argument turns into a breakup, and the holiday goes from Xmas to Ex-mas. After a brutal snowstorm and airport closure, Cassie is now stuck with her newly minted ex and his family through the holiday.

The film is written and directed by H.

#OregonMade “Earthlings” Premieres At Goteborg International Film Festival

After over two excruciatingly long years, the Oregon-made film Earthlings from Portland filmmaker Steven Doughton and producer Jacqueline Gault will get its World Premiere as the only US film in the 2023 International Competition at the 2023 Goteborg International Film Festival on February 2nd in Goteborg, Sweden.

“We completed the film just prior to the pandemic, and were crushed when festivals went online for nearly two years. We wanted the big festival premiere experience, so we held the film back and waited patiently,” notes Gault.

#OregonMade “Sometimes I Think About Dying” In Competition At Sundance

The #OregonMade romantic comedy feature, “Sometimes I Think About Dying” is set to premiere in competition at Sundance Film Festival (January 19, 04:00 PM – 7:00 PM) in the US dramatic feature section. Stefanie Abel Horowitz wrote the original short and as well as the feature (with co-writers Kevin Armento and Katy Wright Mead) and it was directed by Rachel Lambert, with Daisy Ridley producing and playing the lead, “Fran”.

#OregonMade “Pinocchio” Racking Up Award Wins, Including An Oscar!

Guillermo del Toro‘s take on the classic story of “Pinocchio” has been honored with plenty of nominations (over 100 – see the list) and dozens of wins during this awards season, and ultimately won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature! Some of the more well-known wins have been across a few different categories at the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs, the Lumieres, and the Annies, the list goes on.

The Portland animation studio, ShadowMachine, collaborated with writer-director, del Toro (“The Shape of Water”, “Pan’s Labyrinth”) on this new, and darker, version of the age-old favorite fable for Netflix.
