This fall, Wandering Reel Traveling Film Festival will make its return to Oregon with a collection of short films sure to stir the consciousness of the local community. Wandering Reel is a traveling short film festival with a focus on bringing meaningful films to communities with limited or no access to compassionate, thought-provoking cinema. Bill Plympton Speaks, Oct. 15 & 16, UNDERGROUND USA

On Oct 15, 2016, two time Oscar nominee Bill Plympton will appear as a guest speaker at Oregon Cartoon Institute‘s one day symposium UNDERGROUND USA. The following evening he will introduce a program of his short films at the Mission Theater.

UNDERGROUND USA is one day public history/arts education event which focuses on one chapter of Oregon print cartooning history. It was created in partnership with UO Comics & Cartooning Studies and PSU Comic Studies, and with support from Oregon Historical Society. “In honor of the 90th Anniversary of the Hollywood Theatre and the 90th Anniversary of Buster Keaton’s classic film, Buster Keaton’s, “The General”, which was shot in Cottage Grove, OR, the Hollywood Theatre and Oregon Film present a state-wide tour of the film with a new live score composed by renowned Portland film composer Mark Orton. (OPB did a short piece on this project which explores Orton’s thoughts and inspiration behind this project.)

In collaboration with PDXART, and many other partners (please see list below) a new exhibit is up on Concourse E, at the Portland International Airport this week.  The exhibit showcases “vignettes” of artifacts, props and images from just a few of the 400+ feature films & television shows that have utilized Oregon as their production backdrop over the years.  From the early silent era films like “Fisherman’s Bride” (shot in Astoria, 1908), to “Grimm”, the popular NBC television series currently shooting in Portland, Oregon has played an important role in production. Based on the original screenplay by long time Lake Oswego resident D.C. Rahe, directed by Frank E Johnson (“Shannon’s Rainbow”, “Touched By An Angel”, “Palace Guard”), produced by Sean Skelding, Greg Beber, Tyler Benjamin, and D.C. 30th Anniversary of Stand By Me Was Huge Success

In 1985 Brownsville turned into a town named Castle Rock and was teaming with film crews, actors and all the excitement of the movie making process. Today, the movie is still regarded as a favorite and is listed as one of the top 250 American films of all time. Got a unique film project that contributes to society?  The Roy W. Dean Film Grant is looking to award its grant to one that fits that description.  This year’s winner receives $3,500 cash and $30,000 in donated film products and services to help complete their film.  Films can be documentaries, short films, features, TV or web series. Deadline for submission is June 30th, 2016.

“Lean On Pete” Shooting In Oregon

 “Lean on Pete” tells the story of a 15-year-old boy named Charley Thompson, who, as Vlautin’s website explains, is “left to fend for himself by his wayward single father. Charley wanders to Portland Meadows racetrack one day and finds work with a surly, washed up horse trainer.
