As we head into a new year, it is a good time to reflect on our work and mandates and share what we’re up to here at Oregon Film. Do You Know What (Y)Our Film Office Does?

Who Are We? We are a small (4 people) semi-independent state agency. We work closely with other agencies such as:

Business Oregon
Travel Oregon
Department of Revenue
Oregon Parks & Recreation (Oregon State Parks)
Oregon Governor’s Office

“What does Oregon Film do?” Do you know?

We’re the state film office. Or, the State Film Commission. Or, Oregon Film as some call it. And, as such, we are tasked with growing the film, television, commercial, interactive, and media industry here in Oregon. We bring attention to, elevate, and support the industry in many different ways.

Project support. We think that Customer Service means a great deal. Therefore, we make sure we are responsive, it doesn’t matter if a project is big or small, from out-of-state, or coming from one of our local producers or companies. OAFG21 Grant Winner, “You Go Girl!” Gets Spotlight In New Yorker Magazine

We are excited to see Vivian Cheng’s article and spotlight in the New Yorker magazine (Interviews Issue+ Screening Room) today on Shariffa Chelimo Ali, Director + Co-writer of “You Go Girl!”.

“You Go Girl!” – the fourth annual Outdoor Adventure Film Grant– “Oregon’s Outdoors Are For Everyone” winner (OAFG21) screened at Sundance 2022 in the U.S. Live Action Short Films, and also the Oregon Shakespeare Festival O site. Filmmakers, Shariffa Ali, Kamilah Long, Courtney Williams, and Adrian Aleas’ short film tells the story of Audrey, a New York City comedian who can make a joke of any situation, facing a staggering challenge in the beautiful mountains of Oregon. Here at the Oregon Film office, we often get the question: “What do you do?” Well, the best answer is “a lot” but that isn’t sufficient to really capture all the work that goes on in this office. So let’s break it down.

The Oregon Film office has the mandate to oversee the economic development of the film, television, interactive, animation, and commercial industries in Oregon – with projects and producers that are living and working within the state, as well as projects and producers that are looking to bring their shows from outside of Oregon. Creative Opportunity Program Launches for 2022-23

Last legislative session a bill passed that allowed Oregon Film to allocate funds to a program called the “Creative Opportunity Program.” This program dedicates up to $375,000 per year to creative projects, producers and programs around the state. These programs include the continuation of existing programs like the Pathways job training and placement program, the Outdoor Adventure Film Grant, the Tell Your Story Grant and partnership programs like CINE/SEEN and Creatives of Color Networking events (OMPA) and the BIPOC Filmmaker Grant (BendFilm). What has Oregon Film been up to? – After assuring our industry worked so well through the turbulent pandemic period with several projects of all sizes, 2022 started off with a slow down. Needless to say, Oregon is still attractive and a great place to bring your creative production. Recently we worked with the state legislature and partners like the OMPA and the IATSE and SAG-AFTRA unions to increase the film and media cash rebate percentages from 18% to 25%. Outdoor Adventure Film Grant 2021 “Oregon’s Outdoors Are for Everyone”

Oregon’s open spaces and outdoor pursuits are for all Americans and visitors, yet there is a well-documented inequity in America that is deeply rooted in our shared cultural history, and as a whole, our outdoor spaces are not equally utilized for a multitude of historical, social and cultural reasons. The Outdoor Adventure Film Grant ’21 (OAFG21) aims to help support and amplify stories and storytellers (both in front of and behind the camera) utilizing Oregon’s outdoor spaces as a backdrop.
