Soma Games LLC is an indie video game developer located in Newberg, Oregon. We believe video games can be far more than time-wasters. Video games hold the potential to showcase beauty, reward adventure and excellence, and challenge thinking. Our goal is to passionately and dutifully craft the games that elevate humanity rather than waste it.

A good week for Emmy nominations for #OregonMade creatives!

Weiden and Kennedy received their 21st Emmy nomination for their Outstanding Commercial, “Dream Crazy” for Nike, featuring Colin Kaepernick.

Kamp Grizzly was nominated for Outstanding Commercial for the Netflix ad, “A Great Day In Hollywood”

Crofton Diack, Producer for National Geographic/BBC Studios on their series, “Life Below Zero,” was nominated for Outstanding Unstructured Realty Program.

IFC’s “Documentary Now” gathered up a handful of nominations, such as; Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, and Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series (to Portland native, Alex Buono). #OregonMade Coos Bay native, Jeff Whitty, has been nominated (with co-writer Nicole Holofcene) for and Oscar – “Writing – Best Adpated Screenplay” with “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” Whitty has already gathered 20 writing nominations and 6 wins with this project. Additionally, the film has collected two other Oscar nominations, “Best Performce in a Leading Role” (Melissa McCarthy) and “Best Performance in a Supporting Role” (Richard E. Grant).

Unveiling of one of three signs in Astoria marking the beginning of the Historic Oregon Film Trail.

The Historic Oregon Film Trail has officially begun!

The Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce and the Oregon Film Office developed the initial concept of the Historic Oregon Film Trail (HOFT) and identified Astoria movie locations, in partnership with the Oregon Film Museum, that represent the beginning of the Trail. The Oregon Coast Visitors Association provided additional funding and support for the signs.

Thomas Del Ruth, ASC, Honored and Celebrated For His Work On “Stand By Me”

Thomas Del Ruth, ASC, was honored and celebrated at the Tower Theatre, Bend, last week, for his outstanding cinematography and contribution to “Stand By Me”, and was presented with a plaque by Tim Williams, Executive Director of Oregon Film. “Stand By Me” was based on a novella by Stephen King (“The Body”), and written by Raynold Gideon and Bruce A. Evans, and directed by Rob Reiner. The film shot in Brownsville, and this summer celebrated its 30th anniversary. #OregonMadeShows Exibit

In collaboration with PDXART, and many other partners (please see list below) a new exhibit is up on Concourse E, at the Portland International Airport this week. The exhibit showcases “vignettes” of artifacts, props and images from just a few of the 400+ feature films & television shows that have utilized Oregon as their production backdrop over the years. From the early silent era films like “Fisherman’s Bride” (shot in Astoria, 1908), to “Grimm”, the popular NBC television series currently shooting in Portland, Oregon has played an important role in production. “Seven Wonders” Campaign + Film Tourism – Has Affected Increased Visitors To Oregon

The love for the beauty and magnificence of Oregon as a destination continues – this week the New York Times travel section reported that Travel Oregon’s “Seven Wonders” campaign (Wieden + Kennedy), coupled with the “Wild” movie locations tie-in, increased Oregon’s tourism “by nearly 10 percent growth in statewide lodging revenue in 2014 over 2013, an increase of more than 120,000 social media followers, and a record number of unique visitors to its website”.* Travel Oregon partnered with Oregon Film on three distinct aspects of the “Wild” journey;

the Los Angeles premiere,
the five screenings around the state, and
the Fox Searchlight prize promotion (that promoted the movie’s release, as well as put a nationwide, and international spotlight on the state).

Congratulations to Nancy Haecker (“Wild“), who, at the second annual Location Managers Guild of America Awards, won for “Outstanding Locations in a Contemporary Film”. The awards took place at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills on Saturday night.

According to Variety, Haecker read Cheryl Strayed’s memoir, “Wild”, during a flight, and was so enthused that she wanted to scout the film project. Even though most of the film plays for California, around 60 locations in Oregon were scouted by Haecker; from the high desert in central Oregon, the city of Ashland, Crater Lake, the Portland metro area, to the Bridge of the Gods in the Columbia River Valley Gorge.
