Design Week Portland kicks off next week coming up Oct 9-13th, to showcase all the diversity and talent within the City of Roses. The densely scheduled exhibition of Portland design talent—visual, film, fashion, furniture, letterpress, architecture, and beyond—has galvanized the creative masses in Portland to fling open their doors, network their asses off, and generally show off.
“We’re selling tickets earlier than ever this year and anticipate a great response from members and the general public. Buzz has been building about our films and parties, including the resurgence of a dance party, which will be held at our newest venue, the Cascade Theatrical Company, on Friday night of the festival featuring DJ Bryan Swett.”
Showing his continued support of Oregon’s film and television industry, Governor John Kitzhaber issued an official Proclamation today declaring August 17, 2012 “ParaNorman Day”. Below is the language of the proclamation.
WHEREAS:Oregon has a longstanding and honorable tradition of encouraging the entertainment arts and the abundantly talented individuals whose creative work delights, informs and educates our citizens; and
WHEREAS:The handcrafted, stop-motion animated 3d movie “ParaNorman” is the second feature film produced by Oregon-basedanimation studio LAIKA; and
WHEREAS:LAIKA is deeply committed to creating an environment that supports and celebrates the art and artistry of animated filmmaking; and
WHEREAS:The lead character Norman is a young boy of ingenuity, empathy, courage and optimism and thus embodies character traits Oregonians hold most dear; and
WHEREAS:“ParaNorman” was produced entirely in Oregon and will be released nationwide by Focus Features on August 17, 2012;
NOW,
THEREFORE:I, John Kitzhaber, Governor of the State of Oregon, hereby proclaim August 17, 2012 to be
PARANORMAN DAY
in Oregon and encourage all Oregonians to join in this observance.
Today the Emmy Nominations were announced and “Portlandia” came away with two big nominations. The show was nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. Writers Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein, Jonathan Kreisel and Karey Dornetto were all listed in the nomination. The show was also recognized for Outstanding Directing in a Variety Series thanks to Jonathan Kreisel’s amazing direction. NBC Universal’s series, “Grimm” was honored for it’s environmentally friendly production practices at the 33rd Annual Travel Portland Tourism and Hospitality Industry Awards last week. This award recognizes environmentally friendly business practices that “help sustain Oregon’s exceptional quality of life”.
DIVA’s Youth Visions’ program announced the 2012 Teen Video Challenge Competition winners with a screening and awards ceremony on Saturday, April 14th at the Bijou Theater in Eugene.
The festival’s Jury was please to recognize two first place winning videos this year. Festival Director Steve Newcomb made the awards before a packed theater.

Join us at Curious Comedy Theatre every third Sunday of the month for Attack of the Flix – a competition for Portland filmmakers.
All films must be less than 10 minutes long and are submitted on USB thumb drives. We screen nothing beforehand! Admission is free (donation bucket at the door).
Eugene, OR. DIVA’s Youth Visions’ program is now accepting 5-minute videos, or shorter, produced by Lane County youth ages 13-19 for its 2012 Teen Video Challenge Festival. The submission deadline is March 2, 2012.
Each year teens from all over Lane County submit work that is reviewed by a panel of video professionals and educators. Winning videos will be awarded cash prizes at this year’s event on Saturday, April 14th at the Bijou Cinema Arts Theater in Eugene.
This year the University of Oregon’s media team was able to record the annual meeting and now it’s available here.
