The Northwest Film Center is excited to be offering a Saturday workshop with local composer Mark Orton, who composed music for the films Nebraska and Boxtrolls, in addition to a new soundtrack for Buster Keaton’s The General and work on This American Life.

How to find, hire and work with a film composer, from the demo process to finished picture. The instructor’s musical palette and style will guide the discussion, along with real-life case studies from a variety of feature, documentary and fine art films. Bill Plympton Speaks, Oct. 15 & 16, UNDERGROUND USA

On Oct 15, 2016, two time Oscar nominee Bill Plympton will appear as a guest speaker at Oregon Cartoon Institute‘s one day symposium UNDERGROUND USA. The following evening he will introduce a program of his short films at the Mission Theater.

UNDERGROUND USA is one day public history/arts education event which focuses on one chapter of Oregon print cartooning history. It was created in partnership with UO Comics & Cartooning Studies and PSU Comic Studies, and with support from Oregon Historical Society. Hatfield Marine Science Center Hosts Ocean Research Mini-Film Fest

screen_shot_2016-09-11_at_5-15-21_pmOregon State’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport,  will be hosting a short mini-film fest September 22nd, at 5 and 7PM at the Hennings Auditorium of the Visitor Center.  The films will cover topics such as:

  • Oregon State University’s Marine Studies Initiative;
  • Ocean sound in the bottom of the Mariana Trench, with NOAA’s Bob Dziak;
  • Blue whales nursing, with Leigh Torres of OSU’s Marine Mammal Institute;
  • Ocean acidification, by OSU’s Justin Smith, with Caren Braby and Steven Rumrill of ODFW;
  • At sea larvae and plankton sampling with faculty and students from the Cowen/Sponaugle Lab at HMSC

Over 7000 High Schools Students Attended NW Youth Careers Expo 2016

Oregon Film hosted a booth again this year at the NW Youth Careers Expo, and we were joined by representatives from:

Selected high school students, and Governor Kate Brown, addressed the pre-expo breakfast attendees, reinforcing the message that supporting Oregon’s youth as they emerge into the workforce is integral to our state’s growth.

Local High School’s Anti-Bullying Video, Wins Paste Cloud Contest


Jon Garcia, Sunset High school’s language arts teacher, created a video designed to combat cyber-bullying, and has got the attention of the $10,000 Paste Cloud Video Contest.  Paste Cloud were, “giving away $10,000 to celebrate the launch of our new video platform for musicians, short filmmakers, comedians and more.”  Read more here. We are looking for storytellers for the LAUNCH Student Film Competition with short films that are innovative,  creative, original, inspiring, relevant, compelling, entertaining, thought-provoking, funny, and unique.

Do you have a great story to share?  Here’s what you need to know:

  • No entry fee—it’s FREE!
  • Films need to be 5 minutes or under.
  • Genres include animation, claymation, documentary, or narrative—it’s up to you!
  • Five categories: grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, college undergrads, and PridePrize.
  • Winners receive CASH prizes!
