Amazon Aquires Elemental Technolgies

Elemental Technologies, Inc., one of Portland’s fastest growing tech companies, announced today that they have joined forces with Amazon Web Services, Inc. According to CEO, Sam Blackman, the acquisition will enable Elemental to “accelerate the development and adoption of (our) software-defined video platform”. Elemental specializes in “high-speed video encoding and transcoding software” that can “provide multiscreen content delivery to audiences on any screen or device”. Their headquarters are based in Portland, with offices in the UK, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore.

Film Composing Studio With Mark Orton

731395_300x300 The Northwest Film Center is holding a four day intensive studio on composing for film from October 22-25. Taught by Nebraska composer Mark Orton, and for filmmakers and musicians of all experience levels. Students will spend days one and two at the Film Center getting an overview of the particularities of film composing and to establish filmmaker-musician teams. Days three and four will be held at Dead Aunt Thelma’s Studio in SE Portland and will be devoted to active composing for picture along with continuous director/composer score-feedback sessions, followed by in-studio live recording and mixing of the score.

Beth Harrington Productions & Argot Pictures Announce the Theatrical Release of The Winding Stream

Argot Pictures and Indie filmmaker Beth Harrington are pleased to announce that her latest music documentary film, The Winding Stream – The Carters, The Cashes and the Course of Country Music, will begin its theatrical release in Portland, Oregon on Thursday, September 17th at the historic Hollywood Theatre. The screening will include a Q&A with director/producer Beth Harrington and a special pre-show performance by the Johnny Cash tribute band—Counterfeit Cash.

Local Prop Master, Tim Oakley, Featured Artist In AboutFace Magazine

Local Portland Prop Master, Tim Oakley, gets a well-deserved spread in AboutFace Magazine’s summer issue as a featured artist this month. Oakley (Oakley Design Studios) designs and creates intricate props, logos and set designs for features, TV and commercials. Most recently Oakley has created some of the iconic props for local Oregon shows such as “Grimm”, “The Librarians”, “The Green Room”, and others such as “”Dark Knight Rises”, “Start Trek” (1 and 2), “Indiana Jones” and “Jurassic World”, amongst many others.

Academy Award Winning Short, “Closed Mondays,” celebrating its 40th anniversary will be screened before the feature.

In this claymation film, celebrated author Mark Twain (James Whitmore), displeased with the state of humanity, sets off in a hot-air balloon to meet his celestial destiny: Halley’s Comet. Stowed away on the craft are beloved characters from Twain’s stories — Tom Sawyer (Chris Ritchie), Becky Thatcher (Michele Mariana) and Huckleberry Finn (Gary Krug).

Cubebot Ninja Battle!

In this miniature action-packed duel for Areaware’s wooden Cubebot toys, the Hinge team took on the challenge of creating a fun, stop motion style animation using CG characters and live action plates. To give this CG spot an authentically crafty stop motion feel, the crew used a combination of animation, camera and compositing techniques.

A great afternoon is shaping up for local visual effects and animation artists + fans. Join us for a roundtable style discussion of the current state of visual effects filmmaking! Welcome three VFX Supervisors well known throughout the industry: 3 time Oscar winner Jim Rygiel (Lord of the Rings, Godzilla), Sue Rowe (The Maze Runner, Ender’s Game), and Portland’s own Ed Irastorza (Grimm) will be on hand to field questions from moderators as well as audience Q&A.

Roy W. Dean Fall Film Grant Now Accepting Submissions

Applications are now being accepted for the fall Roy W. Dean Film Grant. The grant seeks films that are unique and make a contribution to society. The winner receives $3,000 cash and close to $30,000 in film products and services to use to complete their film. Films can be documentaries, short films, features, or webisodes. Deadline for submission is September 30th, 2015.

The grant includes some very unique and exceptional prizes. Award winning composer David Raiklen will give the grant recipient $15,000 in theme music and score for their project.

A24 Picked Up US Rights To “Green Room”

the_green_room A24 has picked up the US rights to “Green Room” before it premieres (N. American) at the Toronto Film Festival this September.

“Green Room” was shot and produced in Oregon, and is the latest thriller Jeremy Saulnier (“Blue Ruin”) and produced by Neil Kopp, Anish Savjani and Victor Moyers, and starring Patrick Stewart and Anton Yelchin. It’s set to have it’s theatrical release spring 2016. It was also part of this year’s Cannes Director’s Fortnight .
