Catherine E. Coulson Dies At 71

Coulson_Catherine_color_2012Catherine E. Coulson passed away at her home in Ashland on Monday.Coulson has spent 22 seasons acting in the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, but perhaps she is best known as the “log lady” in David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks”. Portland Opera And OMSI To Expand “Opera On Screen” Film Series

AidaPortland Opera and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) will expand their collaborative “Opera on Screen” film series this fall. “Opera on Screen” began in September 2014 with high-definition screenings of four San Francisco Opera productions.

The 2015 series will include four new San Francisco Opera titles—Verdi’s Aida, the Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia, and Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov—as well as two bonus screenings—a Halloween weekend duo of The Phantom of the Opera with Lon Chaney and Brian De Palma’s cult classic, Phantom of the Paradise, a contemporary adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera.

Nike and U of O Create Parody Of “Animal House”

Nike has released a video parody of the (in)famous toga scene from “Animal House” (originally shot on the University of Oregon campus in 1978) that showcases a collection of athletes and U of O VIP’s dancing to Otis Day and the Knights’ “Shout”.  It’s fun to see the lines between a classic film and such sporting legends blur.  Read Oustide’s article here.

Google Trekker Brings It’s Camera Technology To The Oregon Wilderness

Google’s  Trekker Camera is slowly bringing it’s technology to the trail.  This summer volunteers from the Oregon Wild organization (formerly the Oregon Natural Resources Council or ONRC) offered to carry the Trekker and hike some of Oregon’s most beautiful trails in order to bring a “street view” to the public and is so doing, bringing attention to conservation lands in Oregon.  OPB covered the story and you can read more here.

Update: Also, Oregon Wild have a film festival that kicks off September 9th “Speaking For The Trees” at the Bijou Arts Cinemas in Eugene.

1859 Profiles Four Oregonian Documentarians

1859 Magazine profiled four Oregon documentary directors and highlighted what drives their passion to bring their stories to the screen, and what they have to do make that happen.

Oregon has seen an uptick in documentaries in the last few years, with such projects as Brian Lindstrom’s “Mothering Inside“, Melissa Lowry’s “Black Girl in Suburbia“, John Waller’s “Mending The Line“, and Irene Taylor Brodsky’s “Open Your Eyes“.

Hinge Produces Launch Spot For Inspired Health Campaign

Amazon Aquires Elemental Technolgies

Elemental Technologies, Inc., one of Portland’s fastest growing tech companies, announced today that they have joined forces with Amazon Web Services, Inc.  According to CEO, Sam Blackman, the acquisition will enable Elemental to “accelerate the development and adoption of (our) software-defined video platform”.  Elemental specializes in “high-speed video encoding and transcoding software” that can “provide multiscreen content delivery to audiences on any screen or device”.  Their headquarters are based in Portland, with offices in the UK, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore.

Film Composing Studio With Mark Orton

731395_300x300The Northwest Film Center is holding a four day intensive studio on composing for film from October 22-25. Taught by Nebraska composer Mark Orton, and for filmmakers and musicians of all experience levels. Students will spend days one and two at the Film Center getting an overview of the particularities of film composing and to establish filmmaker-musician teams. Days three and four will be held at Dead Aunt Thelma’s Studio in SE Portland and will be devoted to active composing for picture along with continuous director/composer score-feedback sessions, followed by in-studio live recording and mixing of the score.

Argot Pictures and Indie filmmaker Beth Harrington are pleased to announce that her latest music documentary film, The Winding Stream – The Carters, The Cashes and the Course of Country Music, will begin its theatrical release in Portland, Oregon on Thursday, September 17th at the historic Hollywood Theatre. The screening will include a Q&A with director/producer Beth Harrington and a special pre-show performance by the Johnny Cash tribute band—Counterfeit Cash.
