Hatfield Marine Science Center Hosts Ocean Research Mini-Film Fest

screen_shot_2016-09-11_at_5-15-21_pmOregon State’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport,  will be hosting a short mini-film fest September 22nd, at 5 and 7PM at the Hennings Auditorium of the Visitor Center.  The films will cover topics such as:

  • Oregon State University’s Marine Studies Initiative;
  • Ocean sound in the bottom of the Mariana Trench, with NOAA’s Bob Dziak;
  • Blue whales nursing, with Leigh Torres of OSU’s Marine Mammal Institute;
  • Ocean acidification, by OSU’s Justin Smith, with Caren Braby and Steven Rumrill of ODFW;
  • At sea larvae and plankton sampling with faculty and students from the Cowen/Sponaugle Lab at HMSC

Lighting On Location With Gary Nolton Starts April 14th

Over 7000 High Schools Students Attended NW Youth Careers Expo 2016

Oregon Film hosted a booth again this year at the NW Youth Careers Expo, and we were joined by representatives from:

Selected high school students, and Governor Kate Brown, addressed the pre-expo breakfast attendees, reinforcing the message that supporting Oregon’s youth as they emerge into the workforce is integral to our state’s growth.

Local High School’s Anti-Bullying Video, Wins Paste Cloud Contest


Jon Garcia, Sunset High school’s language arts teacher, created a video designed to combat cyber-bullying, and has got the attention of the $10,000 Paste Cloud Video Contest.  Paste Cloud were, “giving away $10,000 to celebrate the launch of our new video platform for musicians, short filmmakers, comedians and more.”  Read more here. We are looking for storytellers for the LAUNCH Student Film Competition with short films that are innovative,  creative, original, inspiring, relevant, compelling, entertaining, thought-provoking, funny, and unique.

Do you have a great story to share?  Here’s what you need to know:

  • No entry fee—it’s FREE!
  • Films need to be 5 minutes or under.
  • Genres include animation, claymation, documentary, or narrative—it’s up to you!
  • Five categories: grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12, college undergrads, and PridePrize.

Nike and U of O Create Parody Of “Animal House”

Nike has released a video parody of the (in)famous toga scene from “Animal House” (originally shot on the University of Oregon campus in 1978) that showcases a collection of athletes and U of O VIP’s dancing to Otis Day and the Knights’ “Shout”.  It’s fun to see the lines between a classic film and such sporting legends blur.  Read Oustide’s article here. Film Composing Studio With Mark Orton

731395_300x300The Northwest Film Center is holding a four day intensive studio on composing for film from October 22-25. Taught by Nebraska composer Mark Orton, and for filmmakers and musicians of all experience levels. Students will spend days one and two at the Film Center getting an overview of the particularities of film composing and to establish filmmaker-musician teams. Days three and four will be held at Dead Aunt Thelma’s Studio in SE Portland and will be devoted to active composing for picture along with continuous director/composer score-feedback sessions, followed by in-studio live recording and mixing of the score.
