OMPA welcomes the Creative Conference with the 2nd annual “Oregon’s Got Talent” event at Indent Studios on Friday night, September 16th. OMPA is a trade group for professionals in Oregon’s commercial, film, television and new media production business, and has been a supporter of the Creative Conference since its inception, as the event promotes Oregon’s broad creative industry. The point of “Portlandia” may be to lampoon the more eccentric facets of its namesake city, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t an intense amount of love behind the jokes. Indeed, stars and co-creators Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen took part in a benefit August 20th for In Other Words – a non-profit bookstore on Northeast Killingsworth Street you might recognize from the Portlandia-verse as the Women & Women First bookstore of Season 1. 25 years ago, on August 8th, a film shot in Oregon was released nationwide in the theatres. It hasn’t stopped playing since. It is currently #175 on IMDB’s top 250 list, above “Avatar” and “Gandhi”. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay from Stephen Kings’ novella “The Body”; the Japanese Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film; and won the Jackie Coogan Youth Award for the cast of River Phoenix, Wil Wheaton, Jerry O’Connell and Corey Feldman. As the Season 4 premiere of “Leverage” approaches, more and more photos and video footage is coming online to promote the premiere. This year the premiere episode takes place up on top of a mountain. The real mountain was Oregon’s Mt. Hood and in February, Mt. Hood gets A LOT of snow. During the shoot, the cast and crew endured an even bigger than normal snowfall but after enduring the elements, it’s apparent that they got a great premiere episode.
Recently the media that covers the film and television industry has taken notice in all the work happening in the state. In the web based trade “The Wrap”, a recent article about the state of the TV industry mentioned Portland as a city on the rise for TV production. We were also contacted by the Hollywood Reporter a month or so ago as they decided to do a feature on the TV work in the city.
