#OregonMade Coos Bay native, Jeff Whitty, has been nominated (with co-writer Nicole Holofcene) for and Oscar – “Writing – Best Adpated Screenplay” with “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” Whitty has already gathered 20 writing nominations and 6 wins with this project. Additionally, the film has collected two other Oscar nominations, “Best Performce in a Leading Role” (Melissa McCarthy) and “Best Performance in a Supporting Role” (Richard E. Grant).
Oregonian, Skye Fitzgerald, (now based in Portland and grew up in Eastern Oregon) has an impressive collection of documentaries under his belt. His latest, “Lifeboat” documents North African migrants trying to make it across the Mediterranean sea to safety. “Lifeboat” has been nominated for an Oscar in the Documentary Short Subject category 2019. Set in Ashland, Hillsboro-based LAIKA’s Oscar-nominated animated feature is a wondrous and thrilling, fun and suspenseful adventure. Written by Neil Gaiman and directed by Henry Selick, LAIKA’s first animated feature would set the course for three additional Oscar-nominated films: “ParaNorman” (2012), “The Boxtrolls” (2014) and “Kubo and the Two Strings” (2016); LAIKA’s fifth film, “Missing Link” will be released April 12. This year, the event is open to all local union members and supporters, and is doubling as a fundraiser for local SAG-AFTRA president Robert Blanche, who’s fighting for his life after a double lung transplant. “Lifeboat” showcases the crisis of refugees desperate enough to risk their lives in rubber boats leaving Libya in the middle of the night and pushing off into the unknown, despite a high probability of drowning. With few resources, but certain that civil society must intervene, a team of global volunteers risks the waves of the Mediterranean to pluck refugees from sinking rafts.
