Announcing the 2024 WIF-PDX Vision Grant

WIF-PDX are excited to announce the 2024 Vision Grant! This year WIF-PDX will be awarding two filmmakers $5,000 each for their narrative or documentary short film in post-production.

The Vision Grant, now in its 12th year, has been a cornerstone of Women in Film PDX’s mission to foster creativity, innovation, and inclusivity within the film community. The grant is designed to provide financial support to emerging female and nonbinary filmmakers in the Portland Metro area, enabling them to bring their unique visions to the screen and contribute their diverse voices to the world of cinema.

“Fogtown” Puppet TV Pilot and Videogame to Premiere August 22nd

A new comedic mystery TV series and video game are afoot, each designed to humor, surprise, and rouse mystery fans of all age groups.

The highly anticipated pilot episode of Sherlock Holmes-esque FOGTOWN^© premieres 7:00 pm, Thursday August 22nd at a special event in Portland, Ore. hosted by PAMCUT at The Tomorrow Theater. Cast and creators will also take the stage then to describe FOGTOWN’s decade-long journey — from its incarnation to pandemic-influenced transformation along with its breakthrough foray into the gaming world, the latter of which eager attendees of the event will get to experience firsthand.

Founded by a Hollywood 30+ year veteran/inventor, Owen Stephens, SOC, CROCJAW company services Pacific northwest studios, commercials and independent film producers with Owen’s custom camera truck, and grip & lighting rentals. These include his award winning soft-lighting systems and his very powerful and versatile Crocjaw clip invention.

Inventing by Necessity

An engineer from S Africa with a creative bent, Owen started his film career in the Motion Picture & TV industry at Pinewood Studios with Superman, and climbed the ranks to Gaffer and Director of Photography on a long list of feature films, music videos, and tv commercials, working alongside some of the top cinematographers in the world.

Tell Your Story Grant Winners – 2024

Oregon Film and the #OregonMade Creative Foundation are pleased to announce the winners of this year’s Tell Your Story Grant. This grant program seeks to directly support the individual filmmaker and artist and is not directly linked to a specific project. The TYSG seeks to help early and mid-career creators get to the next step of their career and ensure that career continues to develop in Oregon by providing funding that can be used by the recipient in a more flexible manner.

Immersive “Earths to Come” Heads to the Venice Film Festival

The World Premiere of “Earths to Come” will be at the Venice Film Festival, starting August 28, 2024 in the Biennale College Cinema Immersive program, Portland based Director, Rose Bond, and Producer, Melanie Coombs, announced today.

“Earths to Come” is an enveloping work that seeks to heal the last wounds on our post pandemic hearts by exploring the seductive, delicious and destructive nature of Desire. The piece is a collaboration between expanded cinema director, Rose Bond, Grammy® winning vocal band, Roomful of Teeth, lauded composer, inti figgis-vizueta , and Oscar® winning creative producer Melanie Coombs – each pushing at the edges of their prescribed mediums.

Bat Movie Benefit!

On July 31, 2024 6:30pm at Vivienne Culinary Books in Portland, OR, you are invited to a sneak peak of exclusive work-in-progress scenes from the forthcoming documentary The Invisible Mammal. Meet and mingle with the film’s director, Kristin Tièche, editor, Heidi Zimmerman, and producers Windy Borman and Eileen Kim. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served and wine will be available to purchase (with a percentage of sales donated to the film). A Q&A session with the filmmakers will follow the preview screening.

Refuge VFX Nominated for Emmy for their work on Shōgun

Portland based Refuge VFX was nominated this week for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Visual Effects in the FX Series “Shōgun.” This nomination caps off a very busy year for Refuge who’s work can be seen in recent series like “Fallout” and “The Peripheral”(Amazon), “The Righteous Gemstones” (HBO) and “Superman and Lois” (WB).

SOU Digital Cinema Named as a Top Film School

It’s official: Southern Oregon University’s Digital Cinema program makes SOU one of the best film schools in North America. The current edition of MovieMaker magazine, which bills itself as the world’s most widely read independent film magazine, includes SOU among its picks for the “30 Best Film Schools in the U.S. & Canada.”

“When we launched the Digital Cinema program in fall 2019, one of our big aspirations was to become a nationally-ranked film school,” said Andrew Gay, a professor of Digital Cinema and director of SOU’s School of Arts & Communication.

PNW Indigenous Filmmaker Grant from MSFF

In an effort to raise visibility for Native American and Indigenous voices in film, the McMinnville Short Film Festival (MSFF) is awarding a $10k grant to a PNW-based filmmaker or filmmaking team. Applicants with films at all stages (from development to post production) are encouraged to apply and must complete 50% of production in Oregon.

The goal is for selected filmmakers to complete a short film to be premiered and promoted at MSFF. Please email us at [email protected] for an application.

PFCAT Returns To OMSI August 21st Through 25th

The Portland Festival of Cinema, Animation, and Technology (PFCAT) announced that its 2024 event will be held at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) from August 21 to August 25 and will include screenings, panel discussions, parties, and special events in the Empirical Theater, Theory, the Kendall Planetarium, and OMSI’s auditorium.

This year’s festival includes screenings of over 120 films by visionary filmmakers, including over a dozen Portland-based filmmakers and animators. Innovation will also be displayed in the screening methods utilized at the festival.
