Does Oregon Have The Best City To Live, Work & Make Movies In?

Every year Movie Maker Magazine surveys independent filmmakers in the united states to find the best cities live and work in. They focus on a number of criteria; good cost of living, employment opportunities, quality of life, affordable home prices and of course financial incentives, availability of locations and quantity of crew and vendors.

The annual best places to “live, work and make movies” will be out in their magazine’s winter edition, which is released at Sundance next year. We would love to be on that top ten list again…..so

Portlandia Gets a Premiere Date

In today’s Oregonian Kristi Turnquist writes about IFC’s announcement of “Portlandia’s” premiere date. I’ve had several conversations with IFC about their plans for promoting the show and I can say that the cable network is 100% behind “Portlandia”. Expect to hear of some cool promotional efforts surrounding the show soon! In the meantime, set your DVR’s for January 21 for the premiere episode!

HDFEST Portland High-Definition Film Festival, December 6th-9th

Past festival events have taken place in Sydney, New York, Los Angeles, Seoul, Chicago, London… and now PORTLAND! HDFEST Portland is taking place December 6th-9th at the Living Room Theaters. Tickets are $9 and are available at the festival box office and through the web.

The Brothers Freeman Begin Production of CELL COUNT.

Portland, OR – November 22, 2010

On November 29th, local Portland-based filmmakers, the Brothers Freeman, commence principle photography on CELL COUNT, the second of two feature films made back to back under the i-OPIF incentive program this fall from their production company Polluted Pictures in association with Wooden Frame Productions.

The film, which was written and directed by Todd E. Freeman will be shot entirely on location in Portland for 3 weeks. It stars an all local cast including Robert McKeehen, Haley Talbot, Ted Rooney, Judd Eustice, Christopher Toyne, Suzanne Owens-Duval, Eric Newsome, Sean McGrath, John Breen.

Fun Film News out of Ashland and Eugene

This past week there were two news articles of note; one in the Eugene Register Guard and the other in the Ashland Daily Tidings. In Eugene writer Mark Baker profiled Katherine Wilson’s efforts to start a film museum in the Willamette Valley. For those of you who have seen Katherine’s photos from the days of “Animal House” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, you know she’s collected a lot of film history on her own – here’s the article.

Oregon Film Annual Meeting – December 17th

Mark your calendars… the Oregon Film Annual Meeting will be held Friday, December 17th at 7:00PM. This year’s meeting will once again be a state-wide teleconference event thanks to the support of our friends in Bend, Eugene, and Ashland. The Portland location for the meeting will be Portland State University’s Lincoln Hall.

Attending for the last time as Governor, will be Governor Ted Kulongoski. We need a strong turnout to demonstrate our gratitude to the Governor for all he has done to support our industry.

I was about to step into a graphics company on Powell for vinyl on Wednesday. Finishing a phone call with Bob at the Film Office he said “contributing to the economy?” yes I guess I am. Thinking about all the people, vendors, services I buy everyday I guess this film incentive is working.

We need to start thinking about the big picture. What happens when a film company comes to Oregon?

Northwest Film Center Announces 37th NW Film & Video Festivalʼs Audience Awards

The 37th Northwest Film & Video Festival, which receives submissions from artists in Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho, wrapped up its 9 day run Saturday, November 13 after screening 11 features and 28 short films, 12 of which were singled out for special recognition by Gill Dennis, this year’s festival judge and Master-Filmmaker-in-Residence at the American Film Institute.

Audience awards go to the following filmmakers for best feature and best shorts. Portland filmmaker Andy Blubaughʼs first feature film THE ADULTS IN THE ROOM emerged with the Favorite Feature prize.
