Analog filmmaking is back at the Northwest Film Center! After an almost five-year hiatus, we’re excited to offer 16mm Cinematography again and this time with local Director of Photography Scott Ballard (DEATH ON A ROCK, THE BLACK SEA, HIDING BLAME). The nine-session course will give participants the opportunity to try out different 16mm film stocks (both black & white and color) and even different cameras (Bolex and Arriflex-S). Working in groups, students will complete projects in order to learn about lighting, blocking, and framing.

Hollywood Theatre To Open Annex At PDX

Screen Shot 2015-12-30 at 9.04.01 AMBoring, long layovers and frustrating weather delays will be a thing of the past  –  the Hollywood Theatre is opening an annex theatre in gate C6 at Portland Internatinal Airport. With approximately 5-8 million people passing through every year, the opportunity to entertain travelers while they wait, will be a welcome “first” for a US airport.

Fox12 Showcases Local, International Rigging Company, Spdyercam

Oregonian, Todd’ “Hammer” Semmes,  co-founded Spydercam, with Tim “Doc” Drnec, over 20 years ago in Hood River.  Their unique creative rigging company has assisted over 60 feature films to get those often “impossible” looking shots by rigging their suspended camera systems with precision and creativity that does not compare to other traditional methods.  With offices in Oregon, Colorado, (and equipment in Los Angeles and New York), Spydercam has significantly contributed to such movies as; “Transformer”, “Spyderman” , “The Avengers”, “The Life Of Pi”, “Mission Impossible I, II and II”,  (see all their credits here.)

Discovery’s hugely successful “Deadliest Catch” (now in it’s 12th season) has a new spin off – “Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove“.  Produced by Original Productions for Discovery, the show will be featuring a cast of local Newport fishermen, and their families. In a race against time they will be attempting to catch as many fish as they can during the open season in the typically treacherous conditions of the “graveyard of the Pacific”.

The Oregon, independent game designer, Fullbright, has announced that their popular, and multi- award-winning game, “Gone Home“, will now be available in a console edition, January 12th.  Next up for Fullbright, is Tacoma, coming in 2016.

LAIKA Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Congratulations to LAIKA, who are celebrating their 10th Anniversary this month.  LAIKA has continued to hold it’s own over the last decade, producing animated features that are works of art in their own right – beginning in 2009 with “Coraline“, “ParaNorman“, “The Boxtrolls“, and currently in production, “Kubo and the Two Strings“.

President and CEO, Travis Knight, said it best when he talked to Wired Magazine, “We’re an outlier.
