Analog filmmaking is back at the Northwest Film Center! After an almost five-year hiatus, we’re excited to offer 16mm Cinematography again and this time with local Director of Photography Scott Ballard (DEATH ON A ROCK, THE BLACK SEA, HIDING BLAME). The nine-session course will give participants the opportunity to try out different 16mm film stocks (both black & white and color) and even different cameras (Bolex and Arriflex-S). 41st Northwest Filmmaker’s Festival Kicks Off November 7th

“The Northwest’s premiere showcase of new work by regional filmmakers, the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival—for 38 years called the Northwest Film & Video Festival—brings artists and audiences together for a singular community celebration. Each year the Festival draws more than 400 entries from filmmakers in Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, presenting to the public carefully selected programs of outstanding work and awarding critical recognition to top juror- and audience-recognized films. Taught by food stylist Dolores Custer

The art of preparing food for the camera.

Topics: Selecting and working with different foods (which ones work, which ones don’t); learn to produce steam on demand, a chilled beverage with a splash, cheese melting over a hamburger, grill marks on meats, the perfect dollop, and much more; propping; working as a team with the cinematographer; working on location under minimum conditions; try out techniques and shoot them with basic cameras; last class is devoted to a small group project on a chosen food.

Premiere Screening of Project Viewfinder – Presented by NW Film Center

Join us for an evening of poignant short films, about the myths and realities of homelessness, created by young adults transitioning from struggle to self-sufficiency. Mentored by Northwest Film Center faculty for the last three months, the youth have worked in front of and behind the camera to tell these personal stories of struggle and hope for the future. Many of the young filmmakers will be in attendance to reflect on their experience and take questions from the audience.

Cinema Pacific & Northwest Film Center to Screen “The Burning Plain” with director Guillermo Arriaga

Director Guillermo Arriaga is returning to Oregon, where he filmed “The Burning Plain” in Portland and Coos Bay in 2008. The film featured Academy Award-winner Jennifer Lawrence in her first starring role, alongside Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger. At the Bijou Cinemas and Northwest Film Center, Arriaga will present The Burning Plain and, only at the Bijou, the film he wrote and Tommy Lee Jones directed, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005). While in Oregon, Arriaga will also give the Bartolomé de las Casas Lecture in Latin American Studies at the UO and a public talk at the Oak Hill School. Whether you are an experienced filmmaker or just waiting to make a splash, now is the time to dive in. FUNDAMENTAL & INTENSIVE SCREENWRITING, DIGITAL EDITING, and SOUND DESIGN & EDITING are only a few of the alluring spring classes at the Film Center.

 

DIGITAL EDITING I examines the various styles and techniques of editing using Avid Media Composer. Students will organize footage, add sound effects, and give a voice to their projects.
