IFC Takes Comedy Journey to ‘Portlandia’

‘SNL’ vet Armisen co-created, co-stars in sketch series

IFC has given a greenlight to a Lorne Michaels-exec produced sketch comedy half-hour, “Portlandia,” co-created by and starring Fred Armisen of “Saturday Night Live.”

The series, which begins production of six episodes in Portland, Ore., this month, is scheduled to premiere on IFC in early 2011. Former Sleater-Kinney guitarist Carrie Brownstein co-created “Portlandia” with Armisen and co-stars in the series, which will be directed by fellow creator Jonathan Krisel of “SNL.” Continue reading... “IFC Takes Comedy Journey to ‘Portlandia’”

The Wait, a drama, written and directed by Oregonian, M.Blash (Lying), and starring Chloe Sevigny (Lying, Big Love, Boys Don’t Cry) , Luke Grimes (Brothers & Sisters) and Jena Malone (Lying, Into The Wild, Pride and Prejudice) was shot entirely on location in Central Oregon, specifically Black Butte Ranch as well as Sisters.  Ryan Crisman, Neil Kopp and David Guy Levy produced.  Continue reading... “Central Oregon Hosts Feature Film, "The Wait"”

"Meeks Cutoff" in Competition at the Venice Intl. Film Festival

The Venice International Film Festival announced that Kelly Reichardt’s feature “Meeks Cutoff” which was shot in Burns, OR, will be in competition at this year’s festival in September. The film was produced by Oregon native Neil Kopp and it is his third film with Kelly (“Old Joy” and “Wendy and Lucy“).  The film stars Michelle Williams, Bruce Greenwood, and Paul Dano.  Recently Paul Dano talked about filming “Meeks” in this interview.    For those who don’t know the story behind the making of the film, it’s pretty remarkable that they were even able to complete the film. Eastern Oregon Film Festival in conjunction with Crossing the Blues: La Grande Summer Festival is pleased to present the 3rd annual La Grande Summer Film Project. The project will kick off on Friday August 13th, with a Night Life social event at White House Coffee (1702 Fourth Street). Teams will be identified, organized, and specific criteria for their film will be given. After the participants have had a chance to “schmooze”, ACTION will be called at 9:00pm – and the filmmakers have 48 hours to deliver their final project. From Columbia University to the Columbia River: Portland Filmmakers Return Home to Shoot their Thesis Films

For emerging filmmakers, the film scenes in New York City and Portland are more closely connected than one might think.   Just ask Lena Rudnick, a graduate student in the prestigious Columbia University MFA program in film directing, who got her start as a student at the Northwest Film Center.  Like salmon who come home to spawn in the same river each year, when it came time for Rudnick to shoot her final film of the year, she returned to Portland,  where easy permitting, equipment access, crew, and location ambience readily combined to trump shooting in the Big Apple.
