Lorne Michael’s “Brother Nature” opened September 9th – shot in and around Klamath Falls (down town, Lake of Woods Resort, Keno, among others) for 15 days in the summer of 2014. The feature brought much financial benefit to local businesses, as well as hiring many Oregon crew. Thomas Del Ruth, ASC, was honored and celebrated at the Tower Theatre, Bend, last week, for his outstanding cinematography and contribution to “Stand By Me”, and was presented with a plaque by Tim Williams, Executive Director of Oregon Film. “Stand By Me” was based on a novella by Stephen King (“The Body”), and written by Raynold Gideon and Bruce A. Evans, and directed by Rob Reiner. The film shot in Brownsville, and this summer celebrated its 30th anniversary. The small town of Brownsville, Oregon celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the classic movie “Stand By Me” on Saturday July 23, 2016.
In 1985 Brownsville was turned into a town named Castle Rock and was teaming with film crews, actors and all the excitement of the movie making process. On August 8, 1986 the movie had a limited release at 16 theaters around the country. Today, 30 years later, the fans are more passionate than ever before and yearn to visit the locations of their favorite movie and mingle with others who are just as passionate. Filmmakers, creators and writers should check out the recent announcement from the Northwest Film Center & The NW Filmmakers Festival this November for details on two new grant programs: The Oregon Production Award and the Oregon Filmmaker’s Residency Award.
The OREGON PRODUCTION AWARD is an open competition in which filmmakers are asked to make a short 2 – 3 minute film on the topic of “The Frame.”
The winning film will receive $1,000 in cash, or $1,500 in cash (if film is shot outside of Portland) from the Governor’s Office of Film and Television to be applied towards making a film to be screened the following year. In collaboration with PDXART, and many other partners (please see list below) a new exhibit is up on Concourse E, at the Portland International Airport this week. The exhibit showcases “vignettes” of artifacts, props and images from just a few of the 400+ feature films & television shows that have utilized Oregon as their production backdrop over the years. From the early silent era films like “Fisherman’s Bride” (shot in Astoria, 1908), to “Grimm”, the popular NBC television series currently shooting in Portland, Oregon has played an important role in production.
