A Shoe Company is creating a Record Label?

Photo of Geoff Cottrill from Converse (from NY Times Article)

I finally got around to reading the Sunday NY Times and noticed this article about Converse’s efforts in the music business.  Immediately I thought of my friend JT Griffith who works at Nike as their music licensing consultant.  These days music licensing is critical for nearly every marketing plan.  Previously he was a music supervisor for film and television projects.  So why am I writing about a shoe company and why am I interested in what’s happening in the music business? A Good Résumé Can Make All the Difference

We get calls each week from motivated, young,  job seekers who are either entering the work force directly from school or taking their career to the next level.  It can be daunting knowing where to start and so in answer to these queries, we created the career builder page as an addition to the job hotline resource on our site.  We  hope it will be a useful initiative full of  advice, suggestions and tips.  We consulted  with industry professionals to get their take on what makes a resume standout and they also gave us some great do’s and don’ts on the job. MOPAN helps with broadcast from Oregon State Fair

When the bulk of the high profile and higher budget film and video work happens in the Portland metro area, we at the film office naturally get caught up with detailing all the good work happening in the Portland area.  But there is plenty of interesting work happening outside the Portland area and we would be remiss not to mention it.  Recently the Eugene based MOPAN redesigned their website and added a blog feature.  I’m not sure how much credit should go to new President Erik Talbert but I wanted to highlight one posting Erik put up today regarding the national broadcast shoot that happened at the Oregon State Fair.  Continue reading... “MOPAN helps with broadcast from Oregon State Fair”

Oregon's Diverse Talent Base – its Greatest Strength

Oregon Talent

Whether it’s the thriving independent music scene, live theater, or a combination of multiple creative disciplines, there is no doubt Oregon is a thriving base of creative expression.   According to the Oregon Arts Commission over 60,000 jobs in Oregon are directly related to the creative economy.  That may not sound like a lot of jobs but when you figure that Oregon has about 1/10 of the population of California, it’s a large section of the total workforce in Oregon.  So when a film or television project comes to Oregon, there is a rich and diverse depth of talent to pull from. Portland Seed Fund

Seeding Growth and Innovation in Portland

Attached is a link to information on the Portland Seed Fund. What dare you ask is this fund?

I quote:

The Portland Seed Fund is a proposed new investment fund with a mission of investing solely in early stage businesses in Portland and the surrounding region. The Fund will make investments of less than $100,000 to start-ups at the earliest stage of development, and attempt to fill the most critical gap in funding for growing companies, thereby increasing job creation among start-up firms and the pipeline of viable companies for later stage investors.

Portland has been Hiding a Hotbed of Comedic Talent

"The 3rd Floor" photo by Tracey Wilson Photography

Article by Ted Douglass

It’s taken a while, but Portland is finally starting to wake up to the fact that it has its very own exciting comedy scene right under its nose. Sure, there have been a few stand-ups, improv performers and sketch-comedy troupes that have been toiling away long enough to be considered Rose City institutions (nationally renowned acts like Lonnie Bruhn, Dax Jordan, The Bridgetown Comedy Festival, ComedySportz, The Brody Theater, The Liberators, The 3rd Floor, etc…), but it hasn’t been until this year, that members of these niche operations have begun stepping outside of their own brands to co-mingle on various projects. www.OregonFilmAndTVDollars.com Launches

There are lots of sites that talk about the Oregon Film, TV, and New-Media industry… there are official sites like the Governor’s Office of Film and Television, Industry support sites such as the Oregon Media Producers Association, and regional film consortiums such as FOA, MOPAN, and SOFAT.  This site is different.

We’re focused on the economic benefit that Oregon’s Film and TV Industry brings to the state.  In an era of unprecedented economic woes for the Beaver State, Oregon’s film industry is growing – hiring thousands of workers state-wide and pumping millions of much-needed dollars into our economy…
