Portland filmmaker David Poulshock and his production company Red Door Films were recently awarded an astounding nine Telly Awards for TV commercials and web videos they produced on behalf of clients Spirit Mountain Casino and Goodwill Industries of the Columbia-Willamette.
“It’s a real honor,” said Poulshock, “especially for the recognition it gives the wonderful talent and stellar production crews who worked on these projects.” According to Poulshock, the overall production included six :30 spots for Spirit Mountain Casino, and five :30 spots and four 3-minute web documentaries for Goodwill. The highly-anticipated 30th anniversary of “The Goonies“, took place over 4 days in Astoria last month. The celebration kicked off with the Geocache “One Eyed Willie Treasure” hunt at the Astoria Armory, with the official “Goonies Day” being marked as June 7th. Several screenings of the movie took place over the four days with the collective events attracted around 15,000 fans from all over the world, celebrating the “Farewell to Warren Field” (location featured in the film’s opening), original cast appearances and the largest collective of the Truffle Shuffle the world has ever seen! Oregon Governor, Kate Brown, was a special guest speaker at the PWA (Portland Workforce Alliance) NW Careers Expo 2015 breakfast this year, along with Portland Mayor, Charlie Hayes, Portland Public School Superintendent, Carole Smith and Elemental Technologies CEO, Sam Blackman. Around 130 employers, and over 5,000 high-schoolers from all over the state attended the expo . The students were able to talk directly to employers about career options, ask advice on paths to take toward their dream jobs, try hands-on applications and participate in mock interviews. Hinge teamed up again with PM Publicidad in Atlanta to create this broadcast spot showcasing six very different consumer households in one seamless camera move for Cox Communications. The deceptively simple looking spot was the product of meticulous orchestration between the live action and CG worlds.

The project workflow began with the previs team: They roughed out the six virtual sets and developed a loopable camera move to program the Milo motion control rig. At the shoot, a RED EPIC was mounted to the Milo arm, and captured each household’s performance on the green screen sweep, as the Milo moved down the tracks. Portland based feature film to premier at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, January 23rd and 26th.
Birds of Neptune, a feature film by Steven Richter which was shot in Portland in 2013 will make its World Premier in Park City, Utah at the Slamdance Film Festival. With an all local Portland based cast and crew and a soundtrack from primarily PNW bands this is truly a local production.
MovieMaker Magazine’s Fall 2014 issue hit newsstands around the U.S. and Canada this week. It presents MovieMaker’s annual list of the 25 best cinematic celebrations in the world, as selected by people like critic Elvis Mitchell, Emily Best of film site Seed & Spark, Thom Powers from the Toronto International Film Festival and the Sundance Doc Club, Dennis Dembia of Rogers & Cowan, Josephine Decker from Filmmaker magazine, and Karla Rodrigeuz with Alamo Draft House.
Laika’s third big, stop motion feature, “The Box Trolls” (Laika and Focus Features) had some positive nationwide opening numbers, $17.3 million gross, Laika’s biggest opening yet. Laika President,Travis Knight, and Focus Features CEO, Paul Schlessel announced late last week that they will continue to work together for three more projects.
The Oregon Story Board announced its five early-stage companies that were selected for the first OSB Accelerator Class. There is a vibrant mix of film & video, digital media, animation, content, and gaming industries – all that “make up Oregon’s digital storytelling ecosystem”.* The companies are:
CHROMA Chroma makes high-design tools for the creative class. Their first product is Chroma Signal, a mobile app that allows users to create, share, and subscribe to YouTube playlists. Chroma makes it easier to create and distribute lo-fi TV content with great storylines.
Bill Pullman (“Independence Day”, “While You Were Sleeping”) and Rita Wilson (“Jingle All The Way”, “Runaway Bride”) are currently starring in “Brother In Laws” (working title) shooting in and around Klamath Falls this month and next. Downtown Klamath Falls, a rural cabin, and Lake of Woods are some of a number of locations being used. Line Producer, Jenny Hinkey, told NBC 2 News, that she expects at least $700,000 will be spent in the local economy. Hinkey said, “In a very brief amount of time we can have a have a great impact on an area, and it’s a lot of fun for the community”.
