Tomorrow night sees “Grimm“‘s last season premiere – we will all be sad to say goodbye to the show’s quirky and murky portrayal of Portland’s fictitious underbelly, the real city locations, the Wesen, the Police precinct, and the many character actors and stars alike. Six seasons, seven years in the making, and well over 100 episodes later, “Grimm” is set to come to an end, but it leaves behind a healthy and successful legacy of collaboration between the city, NBC, the many crew members, special effects houses, extras, and literally hundreds of local services and vendors. “Paint Your Wagon” shot outside of Baker City, filming between May and October, 1968 – a western musical film starring Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood, and Jean Seberg, adapted by Paddy Chayefsky from the 1951 stage musical by Lerner and Loewe. “Wagon”was set in a mining camp in Gold Rush-era California, although the actual location of the main set was close to Baker City, and the Eagle Cap Mountains along East Eagle and Jack Creek. I first heard about the #OregonMade trademark at the Portland International Airport while viewing actual artifacts from several films shot in Oregon on display.
Now the Oregon Film Museum is stepping out and celebrating ‘Animal House’ with a huge party in Portland on October 30th, 2016. And the local communities, who hold their own local celebrations, are stepping up to support the Oregon Film Museum too.

Lorne Michael’s “Brother Nature” opened September 9th – shot in and around Klamath Falls (down town, Lake of Woods Resort, Keno, among others) for 15 days in the summer of 2014. The feature brought much financial benefit to local businesses, as well as hiring many Oregon crew. Thomas Del Ruth, ASC, was honored and celebrated at the Tower Theatre, Bend, last week, for his outstanding cinematography and contribution to “Stand By Me”, and was presented with a plaque by Tim Williams, Executive Director of Oregon Film. “Stand By Me” was based on a novella by Stephen King (“The Body”), and written by Raynold Gideon and Bruce A. Evans, and directed by Rob Reiner. The film shot in Brownsville, and this summer celebrated its 30th anniversary. “In honor of the 90th Anniversary of the Hollywood Theatre and the 90th Anniversary of Buster Keaton’s classic film, Buster Keaton’s, “The General”, which was shot in Cottage Grove, OR, the Hollywood Theatre and Oregon Film present a state-wide tour of the film with a new live score composed by renowned Portland film composer Mark Orton. (OPB did a short piece on this project which explores Orton’s thoughts and inspiration behind this project.)

The first spinoff of Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch” began airing begin airing this September – “Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove” and premiered to 1.54 million viewers.
The show chronicles 4 families that fish for Dungeness crab in the treacherous, beautiful and rugged Oregon Coast. The show follows Newport locals; Marc Sehlbach; Mikey Retherford, Jr.; Chris Retherford; Gary Ripka, his son, Kenny Ripka; and Jonny Law.

#OregonMadeShows Exibit
In collaboration with PDXART, and many other partners (please see list below) a new exhibit is up on Concourse E, at the Portland International Airport this week. The exhibit showcases “vignettes” of artifacts, props and images from just a few of the 400+ feature films & television shows that have utilized Oregon as their production backdrop over the years. From the early silent era films like “Fisherman’s Bride” (shot in Astoria, 1908), to “Grimm”, the popular NBC television series currently shooting in Portland, Oregon has played an important role in production.
