We are getting closer and closer to ParaNorman’s August 17th premiere, and there are all kinds of exciting things going on around the country and around the net as the anticipation builds. This is a brief run-down of some of the things going on in the next two weeks.

Nationally renowned filmmaker Todd Haynes is the subject of a one-of-a-kind portrait that posted today on eBay. This ten-day auction supports a good cause: Haynes donated the giclee print to benefit The Right Brain Initiative’s arts education programming in Portland, Oregon area schools. The print is signed by both Haynes and the portrait’s artist, Steve Cohn. Cohn is brother-in-law to Haynes, and works under the pseudonym Jasper Marks. It’s been a busy summer for us interns at Oregon Film compared to what most people our age are doing right now: swimming, camping, and vacationing in general. As much as we’d like to take time off and just relax or sleep the summer away, we’ve been filming videos all summer long, working hard to show the people of Oregon, and the legislature, how the film industry has quietly and stealthily been successful both in-front of and behind the cameras. In July with the cooperation of Oregon’s Department of Revenue we conducted our first ever auction for the Oregon Production Investment Fund tax credits. By the time the auction was completed we had more bids for the tax credits than what was available. The second stage of the auction required those who submitted a bid to turn in a cashier’s check or money order no later than July 20. A few months back the wood framed sunglasses company Shwood produced a fantastic website featuring many beautiful Oregon locations. The site was called “This is Oregon” and it featured locations all over the state. Today I received a link to another video produced by Shwood but this time they used a 3D technique dating back to the early 1800’s. The technique is called Stereoscopy and as Shwood describes it:
Invented in 1838, Stereoscopy is a technique used for creating the illusion of three-dimensional depth from images on a two-dimensional plane.
Earlier in the day we sang the praises of the two Emmy Nominations for “Portlandia” and the three Emmy Nominations for Weiden + Kennedy. We failed to recognize the fact that “Grimm” was nominated in the Outstanding Stunt Coordination category. Stunt Coordinator was recognized for his work on the episode “The Woman in Black”. Today the Emmy Nominations were announced and “Portlandia” came away with two big nominations. The show was nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. Writers Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein, Jonathan Kreisel and Karey Dornetto were all listed in the nomination. The show was also recognized for Outstanding Directing in a Variety Series thanks to Jonathan Kreisel’s amazing direction. The episode Jonathan was recognized for was “One Moore Episode” which was voted by the fans as the best episode to date. The annual Comic-Con convention took place in San Diego, CA this past weekend, and LAIKA/Focus Features’ ParaNorman was there in full force. In addition to Norman and the larger-than-life-sized Zombies (seen above) roaming the halls of the convention, there was also a ParaNorman ice cream truck and plenty of free ParaNorman swag being handed out. Attendees were also treated to a live ParaNorman panel in Hall H (appropriately held on Friday the 13th) that offered a sneak peek of the film, behind-the-scenes footage, and a better idea of what to expect when the film premieres August 17th, 2012.
