The Pulse of Living Beings: An Evening with Jim Trainor

Working almost exclusively on 16mm for his entire career, Chicago filmmaker and animator Jim Trainor’s preferred technique is Sharpie on typing paper. This is the medium he used to create THE ANIMALS AND THEIR LIMITATIONS, a series of pulsing line-drawn animated films featured at this year’s Experimental Film Festival Portland. Exploring the natural/animal world, the series uses a witty balance of scientific exposition and humorous narration often coming from the animal itself (one piece screened in the 2004 Whitney Biennial in New York).

Bend, OR – May 8, 2012. Faceout Studio, a firm specializing in book design since 1996, has recently expanded its services to include film production. Faceout Films shot its first book trailer in the fall of 2010 and has since produced over 20 projects for various national media companies. Faceout Films is currently producing trailers, teasers, commercials, interviews and short films. Second Story Creates Interactive Sculpture for TEDx

Portland’s Second Story interactive studio recently created a special interactive video sculpture for display at the Portland TEDx after-party. As you can see in the making-of video above, the sculpture went from floor to ceiling and allowed guests to interact by translating their movements into a colorful digital visual display. Second Story explains the project further:

Positioned at the center of a large art gallery, the installation embodied the spirit of the conference theme, “Uncharted Territory.” Topographic forms and kinetic shapes move along the vertical panorama of the sculpture and as guests approach, they become immersed in the flowing landscape.

Mayor Sam Adams: “The City of Portland is Politely Asking You to Put an Emmy on It”

Portland Mayor, Sam Adams, is rallying behind Portlandia for Emmy consideration in twelve categories, including Outstanding Variety Series. Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisens’ hit sketch comedy series has already completed two seasons in Portland and is coming back for a third this year. The show won an Emmy in 2011 for Outstanding Costumes For A Variety/Music Program.

HDFEST High-Definition Film Festival at Living Room Theaters May 15th-17th

HDFEST returns to Portland May 15^th-17^th for three nights of screenings of independent films at the Living Room Theaters from 5pm-11pm.

The film festival will showcase over 40 projects in HD resolution including features, documentaries, shorts, music videos and animations. Screening sequences include “HD International Short Films,” “Romantic Relationships and Intrigue” and “High-Definition Gay Films.”

Indie filmmakers will be in town to discuss their work in Q&A sessions after the screenings. The festival also includes various works by local Portland filmmakers including Light of Mine, Sub Rosa, The House Always Wins and Amy Alyson Fans.

The Northwest’s Inimitable Film Version of a Garage Band

In the late 1960’s of Eugene, Oregon, we started a film company in a Garage. Kind of like the beginnings of Nirvana and Microsoft, you know? It was an old auto-mechanic garage with 2 bay doors and a ticket office inside. We had the Movieola in the back room, now famous for the auditions we held there for the “Animal House” sorority sisters in the Pillow-Fight Scene. At the time, I had rented the Ticket Office inside the Garage for $25 a month, and it was literally just big enough for a desk and a chair.

Matt McCormick’s “The Great Northwest” to Screen at Northwest Film Center

After great screenings at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and the Museum of Modern Art, Matt McCormick’s documentary film “The Great Northwest” is being screened right here in the real life Great Northwest.

The film will screen on May 2-3 in Portland at the Northwest Film Center.

The Great Northwest is an experimental documentary based on the re-creation of a 3,200 mile road-trip made in 1958 by four Seattle women who thoroughly documented their journey in an elaborate scrapbook of photos, postcards, and brochures.

Hinge Digital Brings the Carfax Car Fox to Life in CG

When Zimmerman Advertising approached Hinge Digital to bring the beloved Carfax Car Fox to life in CG, we jumped at the opportunity to apply our extensive experience in character development, animation, and visual effects to a national advertising campaign.

Building on a collaboration of several years on over 30 animated commercials, Zimmerman and Hinge began Car Fox’s character development in 2011. Working very closely with the agency and Carfax, Hinge created the spokes-character in CG to seamlessly integrate into the live-action.
