The locally produced feature film documentary Hood To Coast just finished two successful nationwide Event screenings in over 380 theaters, selling out shows in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Atlanta, and several other major markets. The film Hood To Coast follows four unlikely teams on their epic adventure as they try to conquer the world’s largest relay race. The film, produced by Film For Thought, Inc., was shot over the span of 11 months in Oregon in 2008 with half of the 100 crew members hired locally. The 37th Northwest Film & Video Festival, which receives submissions from artists in Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho, wrapped up its 9 day run Saturday, November 13 after screening 11 features and 28 short films, 12 of which were singled out for special recognition by Gill Dennis, this year’s festival judge and Master-Filmmaker-in-Residence at the American Film Institute.

On my way down to Los Angeles this week I came upon a display at the Portland Airport focusing on the history of 3D photography and film in Oregon. You can find the exhibit at the entrance to terminal E which is the United terminal. The exhibit has display items from the past including view finders and other 3D photography items and the present including items donated by local animation/VFX company Hinge Digital and of course LAIKA. NY Film producer Ted Hope is one of the most prolific “tweeters” I know. All of his tweets focus on either NYC or indie film. Most of the indie film stuff is pretty insightful as Ted is well known as one of the top indie film producers in the U.S.. Anyway he posted the list of the top grossing indie films with the question – “What Do the Top Grossing Indie Films of the 2000s Reveal?” I’m not sure I know the answer but I did notice LAIKA’s Oregon made “Coraline” made it in at #11.
