DIGITAL ONE, a premier post-production studio located in Portland, Oregon, has been honored by the Portland Advertising Federation (PAF) with two Rosey Awards in the audio category for web videos produced for MasterCraft and Chrome Industries.

The two award-winning web films follow on the coat tails of an impressive year for Digital One. After receiving an AICP Award from the Association of Independent Commercial Producers, a permanent home in the Museum of Modern Art’s archives, and a place on the CLIO Awards shortlist, MasterCraft’s “Mission 04: History Is History” can now add Rosey Award to it’s running list of accolades. LAIKA Scoops Two Annie Awards

Two Oregon companies, LAIKA and Bent Image Lab picked up nominations for the 42nd Annual Annie Awards.  (Bent Image Lab garnered a nomination for  “Polariffic” (Hallmark) in the Best Animated Special Production category, and Laika’s “The Boxtrolls” picked up 13 nominations, including Best Animated Feature.)   Laika was awarded two Annies for Best Production Design and Best Voice Acting (Ben Kingsley as Archibald Snatcher).  “The Boxtrolls” is also nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscar’s next month. BENT Goes “Over the Garden Wall” for Cartoon Network

Portland, Or – Animation studio BENT Image Lab conjures up a series of whimsical storybook promos for Cartoon Network’s “Over the Garden Wall”. Directed by BENT’s Solomon Burbridge, the promos bury the viewer deep inside the beautiful CG/stop-motion pages of a forest-woven book, seamlessly transitioning to clips from the show.

“I wanted to take the well worn old trope of ‘from the vaults’ or ‘magic book opening’ and add a new twist to it,” says Burbridge. “The idea of an infinite tunnel book was a great way to further this idea by giving the interior pages dimension and atmosphere. Positive Opening Box Office For “The Boxtrolls” And Laika’s Continued Partnership With Focus Features

Laika’s third big, stop motion feature, “The Box Trolls” (Laika and Focus Features) had some positive nationwide opening numbers, $17.3 million gross, Laika’s biggest opening yet.   Laika President,Travis Knight, and Focus Features CEO, Paul Schlessel announced late last week that they will continue to work together for three more projects.

“The Boxtrolls” Based on Alan Snow’s “Here Be Monsters”, the cardboard wearing Boxtrolls live beneath the streets of Cheesborough, only coming up from underground at night to collect items they need to build machines for their underground city. Indie Gaming Scene In Eugene Keeps Growing

The Indie Game Convention (that took place October 3-4) was a huge success. The two day convention showcased 15 games all created by local Eugene developers, such as Pipeworks, Buzz Money (bought by Zynga), GarageGames among a few.  This new breed of gaming company creates a variety of jobs, from designers to engineers, programmers to producers and now in Eugene around 150 people are working in game development.

“Simpsons” Mural Unveiled In Springfield, Oregon

Honoring the 25th Anniversary of  “The Simpsons“, a mural went up on the side of the Emerald Arts Center in downtown Springfield with Matt Groenings’s blessing.  It can finally be put to rest ,that the Springfield in the show is indeed the Springfield in Oregon!

VFX/PDX and OMSI Science Pub present: Cardboard Castle + Live MoCap with CCC, 8/19 @ Crystal Ballroom

Join us for a night dedicated to all things imagination as Cooper Johnson & his crew at Cardboard Castle will guide us through inspiration laden breakdowns of their recent work.  Also on hand will be Damon Redmond (Art Director at SuperGenius by day/instructor at CCC by night) and DMC department Director Andy Mingo from Clackamas Community College, both strapped with a loaded Motion Capture setup, with intent to demo it!  There are some lively things happening down at CCC, which will be undeniably clear after seeing the tech in action.
