If you have ever wondered how the casting process works or could use some guidance on better communicating with actors, this one-day workshop with director Scott Ballard, is a great place to start. Over the course of the day, workshop particpants will serve as the director in a mock casting session with professional actors and get inside the art and the technique of assessing and selecting the right talent.

The Northwest Film Center is holding a four day intensive studio on composing for film from October 22-25. Taught by Nebraska composer Mark Orton, and for filmmakers and musicians of all experience levels. Students will spend days one and two at the Film Center getting an overview of the particularities of film composing and to establish filmmaker-musician teams. Days three and four will be held at Dead Aunt Thelma’s Studio in SE Portland and will be devoted to active composing for picture along with continuous director/composer score-feedback sessions, followed by in-studio live recording and mixing of the score. The Northwest Film Center has a Dialogue Writing class that starts Wednesday July 1. Taught by local award-winning writer and director Steve Doughton (Buoy, 2012) the class includes writing exercises meant to unlock your artist’s toolbox, deconstructing scenes from films (Cassavetes and Mamet!), and a session with actors in-class. Over five class sessions you’ll work with Steve to put your ideas into practice while gaining a formal understanding of screenplay structure and dialogue styles. The Northwest Film Center School of Film is pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for its Certificate Program in Film–a non-degree track for individuals aspiring to make films. Applications for the Program can be downloaded from the School of Film’s website, nwfilm.org/school.
The hands-on Certificate Program in Film provides a structure within which individuals can advance from the beginning to advanced level of filmmaking, while creating works that showcase them as emerging filmmaker. Through a Core Sequence, the program teaches the concepts and techniques of cinematic storytelling, while developing the vision of participants as media artists. FOOD STYLING
A new 4-week class beginning Tuesday, May 7, 6:30-9:30 PM
Taught by food stylist Dolores Custer REGISTER NOW
The art of preparing food for the camera.
Topics: Selecting and working with different foods (which ones work, which ones don’t); learn to produce steam on demand, a chilled beverage with a splash, cheese melting over a hamburger, grill marks on meats, the perfect dollop, and much more; propping; working as a team with the cinematographer; working on location under minimum conditions; try out techniques and shoot them with basic cameras; last class is devoted to a small group project on a chosen food.
Join us for an evening of poignant short films, about the myths and realities of homelessness, created by young adults transitioning from struggle to self-sufficiency. Mentored by Northwest Film Center faculty for the last three months, the youth have worked in front of and behind the camera to tell these personal stories of struggle and hope for the future. Many of the young filmmakers will be in attendance to reflect on their experience and take questions from the audience.
