The Northwest Film Center is excited to be offering a Saturday workshop with local composer Mark Orton, who composed music for the films Nebraska and Boxtrolls, in addition to a new soundtrack for Buster Keaton’s The General and work on This American Life.

How to find, hire and work with a film composer, from the demo process to finished picture. The instructor’s musical palette and style will guide the discussion, along with real-life case studies from a variety of feature, documentary and fine art films. It is a ten-session class taking place on Tuesday evenings, October 4 to December 13, that explores how traditional screenwriting can be the launching point for re-imagining plot and character in the interactive Digital Age. Learn all about shooting live events as a trained cameraperson for the Pickathon Music Festival, one of the largest outdoor music festivals in the US (August 4-7).

This mentored crew experience is open to anyone with an interest in filming music, sports and other live events, from absolute beginners/novices to advanced filmmaking students. Film Directing Studio with Scott Ballard June 15-19!

Once again the Northwest Film Center is offering an intensive studio class on Film Directing with local filmmaker and DP Scott Ballard. Over five consecutive days, June 15-19, participants will shoot and direct a scene(s) with professional actors and a small crew, and have the option to edit it to a finished product.

Developing your unique “director’s eye”
Casting, blocking, rehearsing and coaching actors
How directors lead the filmmaking departments (such as locations, wardrobe, make-up, set design, editorial)
Communicating with cast and crew to command the set
Determining a workable shooting schedule
Approaches to lighting, framing and camera movement
The Director’s Line and continuity
Getting the coverage you need for editing
See a range of approaches by crewing for other directors
Get instructor, actor and peer feedback for your directing

Analog filmmaking is back at the Northwest Film Center! After an almost five-year hiatus, we’re excited to offer 16mm Cinematography again and this time with local Director of Photography Scott Ballard (DEATH ON A ROCK, THE BLACK SEA, HIDING BLAME). The nine-session course will give participants the opportunity to try out different 16mm film stocks (both black & white and color) and even different cameras (Bolex and Arriflex-S).
