NewFilmmakers Los Angeles has released the nominees and jury for its 14th annual awards that recognize the top rising talent in independent film globally. Oregon filmmaker Cambria Matlow’s “Why Dig When You Can Pluck” was nominated.

The awards will recognize 130 nominees spanning 16 award categories, encompassing directors, writers, producers, performers, cinematographers, editors, sound designers, and composers. These outstanding nominees were chosen from NFMLA’s most recent programming year, which took place in 2024 and reflect some of the most promising emerging independent filmmakers globally. Last week an auction of all 31 “Coraline’s Curious Cat Trail”  sculptures took place at The Judy and raised a total $244,000 for OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

LAIKA, the Visit Downtown Campaign, Wild in Art, and OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital joined forces to bring Coraline’s Curious Cat Trail to the Rose City last August in celebration of “Coraline’s” 15th anniversary.

Confluence is pleased to announce the second Confluence Filmmaker Fellows program.

Three Indigenous video artists will receive cash prizes to support a film project they are developing: one for $5,000 and two for $2,500. Three other Emerging Indigenous Filmmakers will receive full camera kits (or equivalent cost equipment, calculated at $800) so that they can take their craft to the next level.
