“Portlandia” wins a Peabody Award

Fantastic news coming out of Georgia today.  The Peabody Awards were announced today and “Portlandia” is one of the recipients.  The George Foster Peabody award without question stands out as one of the most prestigous awards that can be given to any radio or television program.

Congratulations to Fred, Carrie, Broadway Video, IFC, and the entire cast and crew who are responsible for making this small show so special.  Now let’s all hope that the next award the show gets nominated for is an Emmy! Continue reading... ““Portlandia” wins a Peabody Award”

Bent Image Lab Teams Up with “Portlandia” for “Zero Rats” Sketch

“Portlandia” recently teamed up with Portland animation house Bent Image Lab to produce a stop-motion animated segment featuring Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein as rats attempting to break into a zero packaging grocery store. In “Zero Rats,” the animators at Bent Image Lab did a great job of translating the improvised sketch comedy into animation.  As you can see in the picture below, the artists at Bent also created some beautifully intricate set pieces.

You can view the final clip above, see the great behind-the-scenes video of the animation process below, or read the full press release about the segmentContinue reading... “Bent Image Lab Teams Up with “Portlandia” for “Zero Rats” Sketch”

DIY Spirit Shines with People’s Portlandia

Last year the TV show Portlandia drew attention to some of the qualities that make our city unique.  Maybe for some of you those skits and characters paled in comparison to your own experiences living in Portland.  Alongside the second season of Portlandia, the Hollywood Theatre, in patnership with PSU’s MFA in Art and Social Practice program will host the first ever “People’s Portlandia,” a collection of Portlandia inspired skits made by Portland residents.

Entries will be accepted through www.peoplesportlandia.com beginning in early December.   Continue reading... “DIY Spirit Shines with People’s Portlandia”

Great Behind the Scenes Film of “Portlandia”

IFC is looking to go bigger and better with season 2 of “Portlandia” and this behind the scenes film is an indication of what we’re going to see in January.  I do think the coolest part of this show is that above all it’s a show being made by great friends.  The friendship shines through in this piece.  Another key element is Jonathan Krisel – the Director and Writer.  I will not be surprised to see Jonathan rise up the ranks and become even more successful than he already is. “Portlandia” Live Tour Announced – Tickets Go On Sale November 22

Today IFC announced a six city tour for a live “Portlandia” show. It’s a natural addition to this budding franchise.  Today’s announcement mentioned that the live show will include special sneak peaks to season 2 as well as behind the scenes stories about the creation of the characters in the show.  Given Fred and Carrie’s rich musical background let’s hope they throw a song or two in there as well!

The tour begins in Portland (of course) on December 27 with stops in Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and finally New York (2 shows).   Continue reading... ““Portlandia” Live Tour Announced – Tickets Go On Sale November 22”

This week IFC put this clip up on their website to give fans of “Portlandia” a taste of what is to come for season 2. We all know that Oregon loves it’s recycling! In fact all you Portlanders – are you ready to start the city wide composting effort that begins October 31? Hopefully we’ll see more clips of “Portlandia” in the weeks leading up to the show’s season 2 premiere on January 9. Continue reading... “Portlandia Recycles! Season 2 Clip Available”

IFC Officially Announces 2nd Season Portlandia Air Date and Guest Stars

Today in the Hollywood Reporter, IFC officially announced the air date for the second season of “Portlandia”.  The show will premiere on January 9 at 10:00PM.  With the announcement came mention of more guest stars set to appear in the second season including Tim Robbins, Kristen Wiig and “30 Rock’s” Jack McBrayer.  Knowing that there were as many as 20 guest stars slated to appear in this second season, we can’t wait to hear who else showed up in Portland to do a bit on the show.  Continue reading... “IFC Officially Announces 2nd Season Portlandia Air Date and Guest Stars”

“Portlandia” wins an Emmy for Costumes

Today the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced that Amanda Needham and Niki Dimitras from “Portlandia” won an Emmy for best Costumes in a Variety or Music Program.  We picked up the story from Kristi Turnquist’s post today in the Oregonian.  Amanda and Niki won the Emmy for their costume design on the episode titled “Farm” which I believe was the premiere episode of the first season (you know the one with Colin the chicken).  Congratulations to Amanda and Niki and the entire cast and crew of “Portlandia”.  Continue reading... ““Portlandia” wins an Emmy for Costumes”

“Portlandia” Gives Back to the City it Satirizes

The point of “Portlandia” may be to lampoon the more eccentric facets of its namesake city, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t an intense amount of love behind the jokes. Indeed, stars and co-creators Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen took part in a benefit August 20th for In Other Words – a non-profit bookstore on Northeast Killingsworth Street you might recognize from the Portlandia-verse as the Women & Women First bookstore of Season 1. The sold-out fundraiser was to support the bookstore’s transition and expansion into becoming the In Other Words Feminist Community Center.
