The Northwest’s Inimitable Film Version of a Garage Band

In the late 1960’s of Eugene, Oregon, we started a film company in a Garage. Kind of like the beginnings of Nirvana and Microsoft, you know? It was an old auto-mechanic garage with 2 bay doors and a ticket office inside. We had the Movieola in the back room, now famous for the auditions we held there for the “Animal House” sorority sisters in the Pillow-Fight Scene. At the time, I had rented the Ticket Office inside the Garage for $25 a month, and it was literally just big enough for a desk and a chair.

Matt McCormick’s “The Great Northwest” to Screen at Northwest Film Center

After great screenings at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and the Museum of Modern Art, Matt McCormick’s documentary film “The Great Northwest” is being screened right here in the real life Great Northwest.

The film will screen on May 2-3 in Portland at the Northwest Film Center.

The Great Northwest is an experimental documentary based on the re-creation of a 3,200 mile road-trip made in 1958 by four Seattle women who thoroughly documented their journey in an elaborate scrapbook of photos, postcards, and brochures.

Hinge Digital Brings the Carfax Car Fox to Life in CG

When Zimmerman Advertising approached Hinge Digital to bring the beloved Carfax Car Fox to life in CG, we jumped at the opportunity to apply our extensive experience in character development, animation, and visual effects to a national advertising campaign.

Building on a collaboration of several years on over 30 animated commercials, Zimmerman and Hinge began Car Fox’s character development in 2011. Working very closely with the agency and Carfax, Hinge created the spokes-character in CG to seamlessly integrate into the live-action.

This year marks the fifth season that Wheel of Fortune has featured a “Going Green” theme week. In past seasons, Pat and Vanna have offered viewers tips for going green and have shared updates about what Sony Pictures is doing to keep the studio lot environmentally-friendly. As well as the kick off Going Green Week, the show is also featuring, Portland Week, College Week and the Great Outdoors. See the schedule for air dates on KATU below:

We were there for the Going Green Week taping and the set looked amazing, complete with a digital waterfall and greenery -both live and re-useable manufactured greens.

Two Great Projects Showing Off Oregon’s Beauty

Nobody has ever doubted Oregon’s beauty. It’s why so many fall in love with this state. There are two new projects on the web thanks to several talented creative individuals that show off Oregon’s beauty in a new and exciting way. In the past year Uncage the Soul Video Production has traveled all over the state showing off some of Oregon’s most beautiful vistas via time lapse photography. Most recently John Waller and Ben Canales screened their most recent video featuring Portland at Uncharted Territory Portland TEDx.

Learn About Animation in PDX from 3 of City’s Best

This coming Sunday, April 29th, the Dill Pickle Club hosts the second installment of A Place Called Home: Lectures on Filmmaking in Portland, a monthly lecture series focused on the history of movie-making in the city, at the Hollywood Theater with guest animators Rose Bond, Joan Gratz and Joanna Priestley. Check out this new short video “Two Minutes with Dennis Nyback,” and hear Dennis talk a bit about the history of animation in Portland, as he previews the lecture.

3 Spots Remain for Film/TV Hair Workshop

Three student spots are remaining for a two-day workshop being taught by three-time Emmy winner Joe Matke (All My Children, 90210) on June 9-10 in Portland.

The workshop — Hairstyling for Makeup Artists — is hosted by Colour Box Makeup Studios and designed to broaden working makeup artists’ hairstyling skills. It is also ideal for beginner- and intermediate-level stylists or any member of a production crew seeking a basic understanding of film/TV hair design.

The workshop will allow participants to offer potential employers a more complete package as they improve their own hair skills and gain a better understanding of working with other hairstylists on productions.
