The Intern Report: How Oregon Businesses Profit From Local Productions
Hello, and welcome back for the second installment of the Intern Report! This week’s article takes us down to a hardware and lumber supplier in Southeast Portland for an interview with the Besaw brothers, Steve and Dave.
How Oregon Businesses Profit From Local Productions
Over the next few weeks, just as I wrap up my internship at the Governor’s Office of Film and Television, I’ll be delivering the fruits of my labor in this four-part series on the media industry’s effects on the local economy. Since late June I’ve been interviewing Oregon businesses that work with production companies to see how the presence of the film and media industry has affected the local economy. Florists, hardware store owners – these people might seem to have little connection to the film industry. Continue reading... “The Intern Report: Film Industry a Budding Market for Portland Florist”

As he proved so winningly in “Stand by Me,” Rob Reiner is a filmmaker who has a way of telling stories about kids, suffusing them with ambivalence and insecurity about their still-evolving selves that feels both heartfelt and authentic.

Brownsville, Oregon is about to come alive with “Stand By Me” fans!
Twenty-five years ago, Rob Reiner and his crew came to Brownsville to make the movie Stand By Me. On Saturday, July 24th, Brownsville will be celebrating the movie’s anniversary with an event that’s fun for all ages.
There will be an amateur pie eating contest (where contestants eat blueberry pie with both hands behind their backs); dancing with a live band playing 50’s music; an old car cruise in; a photo display of pictures taken behind the scenes in 1985 and lots of other things to do and see. Whether it’s the thriving independent music scene, live theater, or a combination of multiple creative disciplines, there is no doubt Oregon is a thriving base of creative expression. According to the Oregon Arts Commission over 60,000 jobs in Oregon are directly related to the creative economy. That may not sound like a lot of jobs but when you figure that Oregon has about 1/10 of the population of California, it’s a large section of the total workforce in Oregon. So when a film or television project comes to Oregon, there is a rich and diverse depth of talent to pull from. Continue reading... “Oregon's Diverse Talent Base – its Greatest Strength”
I just got an email update from Lyla Foggia about the current film she’s promoting – “Deep Green”. The documentary was written, produced, and directed by first-time filmmaker Matt Briggs. After years of witnessing the slow decline of Oregon’s forests, Matt decided to travel the world to find out what we are doing to solve the global warming issue. What he found was solutions to the problem, and the film is an informative detailing of the solutions we as individuals and as a society can enact immediately.
