“American Idol” Comes to Sunriver Resort in Central Oregon

Our hard working friends at the Central Oregon Film Office sent us a link to an episode of “American Idol” that shot at Sunriver Resort back in November and you have to check it out.

Last autumn, COFO worked with the producers to focus on finding ‘B Roll’ locations for the episode, securing regional permits and supplying local production crew for the shoot. COFO also liaised with the producers and the City of Bend (thank you Ben Hemson), the park rangers at Smith Rock and staff at Bend Park and Recreation while also working with the Shops at Sunriver staff to handle drone approval.

Legendary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman is Oregon Doc Camp’s 2020 Keynote Speaker

Oregon Doc Camp, a program of NW Documentary, gathers established and emerging documentary filmmakers at Silver Falls State Park for a four day retreat. The program attracts accomplished speakers from around the country, including last year’s keynote, Laura Nix, whose short documentary Walk, Run, Cha Cha was nominated for a 2020 Academy Award. This year NW Documentary welcomes the legendary documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman.

Tag! Queer Shorts Festival Launch

The Corvallis Queer Film Festival that was started as an OSU faculty project 6 years ago is re-launching as the Tag! Queer Shorts Festival on February 28 at our original home venue, the Darkside Cinema in downtown Corvallis. Tag! Queer Shorts Festival will start offering pop-up screenings in Portland in the fall of 2020 and return to its multi-day competitive festival format in the winter of 2021 hosted by a major Portland arts/film organization.

Tag! Queer Shorts Festival screens work of any genre with a length of 15 minutes or under created by a queer- or trans-identifying filmmaker.

Hair, Makeup, & Special FX Artists Available For Hire

The Art of Makeup School is a great resource to find trained makeup artists who specialize in working on set for film, television, and commercial productions. In addition to hair and makeup application skills from straight beauty and grooming to special fx and prosthetics, these graduates learn about set etiquette, how to break down a script and keep continuity, set touch-ups, and professional hair and makeup supplies for application and on set. The school job board provides opportunities to get graduates working.

Hinge Digital & Blizzard Team Up For Warcraft 3 Reforged

Blizzard and Hinge teamed up on cinematics and loading screens for Warcraft 3 Reforged. First, they reimagined the epic battle between Arthas and Illidan – the first 30 second teaser was unveiled at BlizzCon 2019 to excited fans! They also remastered the classic Warcraft 3 cinematics scenes to look great in HD. Finally, they brought 2D game art to life in campaign loading screens. It was an awesome collaboration for a huge game franchise!

LAIKA Heads into the Oscars

A few weeks ago, LAIKA’s latest film “Missing Link” won LAIKA’s first-ever Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature up against a sea of blockbuster sequels and remakes. And just last week it won two Visual Effects Society awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Animated Character competing against a similarly challenging field.

“Missing Link” also became LAIKA’s fifth straight film to be nominated for a Best Animated Feature Oscar. Voting for the award ends this Tuesday, 2/4, and in the final run up we are helping to celebrate the artistry of this uniquely #OregonMade studio.

Ashland & Portland Make MovieMaker’s 2020 Best List

Oregon cities Ashland and Portland have (once again) been named among the Best Places to Live and Work as a Filmmaker in North America (well, yes, Montreal, Toronto and that other city across the border to our north [but not the one in Washington] are on the list too).

We knew this all along, but it’s certainly nice to be properly recognized. If you haven’t seen the complete list you can check it out for yourself here. Congrats to all the hard working and talented filmmakers, actors, crew and wonderful creatives that help make it happen, every day.

McMinnville Short Film Festival Presents 9th Annual Event

McMINNVILLE, OR: The McMinnville Film Festival Foundation is proud to present the 2020 McMinnville Short Film Festival (MSFF), being held at Linfield College, McMinnville Cinemas, and Chemeketa Community College on February 21st through 23rd.

A festival for amateur and professional filmmakers alike, the MSFF welcomes short films of any genre and of no more than 20 minutes in length. In its 9th year, the MSFF will be screening 85 films from around the world, and will feature keynote speaker Scott Ballard, an award-winning Portland-based filmmaker.

UPDATED: “The Goonies” Celebrates its 35th Anniversary with Statewide Tour

It’s been 35 years since The Goonies audiences first went in search of treasure with a lovable band of kids from Astoria into the caves beneath the northern Oregon coastline and Ecola State Park. To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the film, Oregon Film and Travel Oregon will offer public screenings of the movie in several cities around the state—from Salem Cinema to BendFilm and Eugene’s Broadway Metro to Baker City.

This combined effort and tour is to support the Oregon Film Museum, the Astoria-Warrenton Chamber of Commerce and the official Goonies Day in Astoria celebration event June 4-7, 2020.
