Asian Representation in Upcoming Short Film, “Julia”

Emma Duvall, a Portland-based Korean American filmmaker, saw first hand the lack of diversity in the film industry. Stories told from the Asian American perspective often go untold, and roles for Asian women can be few and far between. Seeking to increase representation, Emma wrote her short film, “Julia”.

Emma based the film on her mother’s experience of growing up in an abusive orphanage in South Korea. It centers on seven-year-old Julia, as she faces a test of friendship, overcomes abuse, and navigates childhood with the odds stacked against her.

Lighthouses of Oregon: A History of Aiding Maritime Navigation Doc By Matt Cook

After half a year or so of hard work, I have completed a full documentary about Oregon’s lighthouses. This movie tells the story of each Oregon lighthouse. These lifesaving structures helped Oregon grow in the early days of the state. Today they stand as very photogenic monuments of our history.

I took on this project because of a love for both my home state and outdoor filmmaking. I find the outdoors to be an escape from everyday life, and I try to show that in videos.

Oregon Film Welcomes New Legislation – Focusing on DEI and Increasing & Expanding Programs

During the last legislative session three new bills were passed that directly effect the work of Oregon Film (OFVO). These bills had the support of the Governor as well as bipartisan support in both chambers of the Oregon state legislature.

The first of these bills passed in the form of HB3010. This bill passed in May and was signed by Gov. Brown in June. HB3010 mandates that all projects participating in the Oregon Production Investment Fund (OPIF) need to have a written Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policy (DEI Policy), make good faith efforts to hire according to that policy, report hiring data to our office and have a written and enactable procedure for the reporting of discrimination and/or harassment at their places of work.

Call for Submissions: OMPA Juneteenth Homepage Takeover

In honor of Juneteenth—a holiday commemorating the freeing of slaves in 1865—OMPA is dedicating the space of our homepage to celebrating Black creators. From June 19-26, our homepage will be a vibrant mosaic of projects and stories from our Black community members. We’ll be promoting the takeover to the community at large, encouraging them to go explore.

Now, we invite Black members of the Oregon production community to submit a photo, video (e.g. reel, trailer), or other visual along with a few sentences that highlight your story/your work.

Ashland Independent Film Festival Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary With A Live & Outdoor Festival June 24-28th

Ashland, Oregon – The Ashland Independent Film Festival is excited to announce the full selection of musical and cinematic events scheduled for its live & outdoor festival running June 24-28 at venues in Ashland and Medford.

At Scienceworks Hands-On Museum, viewers will watch films projected on a large outdoor screen in the field facing the building. At the Walkabout Brewing Company in Medford, viewers will fill the spacious backyard, facing the big screen and stage. Each screening at these two venues will be accompanied by live musical performers, food carts and beverages.

Oregon Film: Who We Are And What We Do – 2021

We are finally seeing the light at the end of a very long tunnel for many of us. This doesn’t mean the work is done or there won’t be challenges and changes going forward, but it does mean that we are starting to see more opportunity and more creativity in all areas of our industry here in Oregon.

We’ve highlighted several stories about our community’s resilience through “The New Normal” series from local companies like Talented Animals, Ravenous Studios, Limbo Films, The Art of Make-up School, PDXpendables, Cast Iron Studios, Koerner Camera and Picture This.

#OregonMade “Trinkets“, received 7 Day Time Emmy nominations and 5 of those are for local Oregon Crews and individual crew members.

This Netflix series season portrayed a grieving teen who, “finds an unexpected connection with two classmates at her new high school after they all land in the same Shoplifters Anonymous group.”

“Trinkets” won two Emmys for the first season for “Outstanding Young Adult Program” and “Outstanding Writing for a Children’s or Young Adult Program” – Writers: Amy Andelson, Stephanie Coggins, Linda Gase, Emily Meyer, Jess Meyer, Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith, Matt Shire.
