Rock N Roll Mamas to Have Portland Preview at POWFest 2013

Portland filmmaker Jackie Weissman is excited to announce the Portland preview of her documentary ROCK N ROLL MAMAS next month on Thursday March 7, 2013 on the opening night of The Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival (POWFest).

ROCK N ROLL MAMAS is a 60 minute documentary about three indie rockers who strive to follow their creative dreams and raise their children. Over the course of six years, director, Jackie Weissman, followed Kristin Hersh of Throwing Muses, Zia McCabe of The Dandy Warhols, and Portland hip hop artist, Ms.Su’ad.

Director Penelope Spheeris announced as the 2013 POWFest Guest of Honor

The Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival (POWFest) organizers are excited to host acclaimed director, Penelope Spheeris, (Decline of Western Civilization I-III, Wayne’s World, Suburbia) as this year’s guest of honor, with a Director’s conversation following the screening of three of her films: DUDES, SUBURBIA and DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION III during POWFest on Saturday, March 9th at 2pm and 7pm .

Each year, POWFest pays tribute to a key woman in the filmmaking industry who has helped pave the way for those just getting their start.

PORTLAND, Oregon (February 7th, 2013)  The feature film “Cell Count” went to film festivals all over the world in 2012 and is now available on all leading digital VOD stores including iTunes.  It is now the Freeman Brothers’ profound pleasure to announce that horror icon Bill Oberst Jr. will be coming onboard for the upcoming sequel entitled “Cell Count II:  Blood Count.”

CITY BABY to Premiere at the 23rd Annual Cinequest Film Festival

Portland filmmakers David F. Morgan and Cora Benesh are excited to announce the premiere of their movie CITY BABY next month at the 23rd CINEQUEST film festival in San Jose.

CITY BABY is a Portland-centric coming-of-age story about a group of meandering 20-somethings trying to find meaning in the new world of adulthood. CITY BABY features live performances by Glass Candy and  STARF*CKR, a soundtrack of local Portland bands including The Chromatics and The Helio Sequence,  as well as a cameo from musical frontman Stephen Malkmus (Pavement).

FiLMLaB’s “Script-to-Screen” Competition

Willamette Writers is soliciting entries for the 2013 FiLMLaB’s “Script-to-Screen” short film scriptwriting competition.

Shooting our winning script from last year, “Alis Volat Propriis.”

We seek writers with the ability to tell a compelling story quickly and cinematically, while adhering to a theme and a practical eye towards real-life movie production. Unique to scriptwriting contests, the Script-to-Screen Competition grand prize is this: we will produce a short film based on the winning script! The winning writer will have the opportunity to meet and collaborate with our production team, attend the filming–in short, to experience the collaborative process of filmmaking!

Next VFX/PDX Meeting – Monday February 11th

It’s that time again.  The Portland area Visual Effects & Animation user group, VFX/PDX, has their winter meeting on tap, and it will surely heat up an otherwise chilly Monday night.

Lead Compositor James Chick of Hive-FX will be showing in-depth breakdowns of their work on the series Grimm, as well as other projects from a very hopping 2012.  James is a talented Compositor who’s weapon of choice is Adobe After Effects, and recently he’s been funneling his free time and filmmaking skills into an impressive run of short films, which should make his presentation one not to miss.

For his feature-length directorial debut, Academy Award-nominated cinematographer (and 2010 Oregon Media Arts Fellow) Jeff Streich turns to a local story. In 2003, 18-year-old Mount Hood Community College freshman Ben Cramer—described by those who knew him as soft-spoken and “extraordinarily ordinary”—was sentenced to life for the grisly murder of his friend, Cassondra Brown.
