The Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival is excited to announce the POWGirls workshops for spring and summer of 2019. The POWGirls Media Education Program launched in March of 2014 and has hosted thirteen successful workshops, producing 19 films and serving over 100 girls and non-binary youth in the Portland metro area.
Our mission is to help girls and non-binary youth, 15-19, realize their power, creativity and voice in media production and encourage them to explore opportunities as future media-makers. POWGirls offers workshops in video production, cinematography, audio recording, set lighting, digital editing and media literacy for girls and non-binary youth ages 15-19. Our instructors are working media producers who inspire participants to be creative, tech-savvy leaders who will help realize gender equity in the film industry. All films produced during POWGirlsworkshops are screened at the Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival (POW Film Fest).

POWGirls depends on partnerships and donations to meet the costs of running our workshops. Since some POWGirls participants are unable to pay tuition, we rely heavily on scholarships to make our workshops available to all young women. NO APPLICANT IS TURNED AWAY DUE TO LACK OF FUNDS.

Portland, Oregon – February 4, 2016 – The Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival (a.k.a. POWFest) is pleased to announce this year’s guest of honor, award-winning director and gender equality advocate, Catherine Hardwicke, who will be in attendance throughout the festival taking place March 3 – 6, at The Hollywood Theatre.
LUNAFEST Comes to Portland on January 25, 7:00 pm at Clinton Street Theater.
Established in 2000 by LUNA, the makers of the Whole Nutrition Bar for Women, LUNAFEST connects women, their stories and their causes through film. This traveling film festival, which will visit over 175 cities this season, spotlights the work of a diverse array of talented women filmmakers with intelligent, funny and thought-provoking themes. The Portland screening will be on January 25th, 7pm at the Clinton Street Theater as part of the POWMonthly Screening series, brought to you by the Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival.

INDIA’S DAUGHTER is the story of the short life, and brutal gang rape and murder in Delhi in December 2012 of an exceptional and inspiring young woman. The rape of the 23 year old medical student by 6 men on a moving bus, and her death, sparked unprecedented protests and riots throughout India and led to the first glimmers of a change of mindset. Interwoven into the story line are the lives, values and mindsets of the rapists whom the film makers have had exclusive and unprecedented access to interview before they hang.
