Thomas Del Ruth, ASC, Honored and Celebrated For His Work On “Stand By Me”

Thomas Del Ruth, ASC, was honored and celebrated at the Tower Theatre, Bend, last week, for his outstanding cinematography and contribution to “Stand By Me”, and was presented with a plaque by  Tim Williams, Executive Director of Oregon Film.  “Stand By Me” was based on a novella by Stephen King (“The Body”), and written by Raynold Gideon and Bruce A. Evans, and directed by Rob Reiner. The film shot in Brownsville, and this summer celebrated its 30th anniversary. Autumn Film Festivals Celebrate “The State of Jefferson”

seal-of-jeffersonA region of the Pacific Northwest that has imagined its own independence as far back as the 1850’s, the ‘mythical’ 51st State of Jefferson, is a proposed U.S. state that would span the contiguous, mostly rural area of southern Oregon and Northern California.

Many a liberated spirit claim this State their home, and as of the 2010 US Census, if the Jefferson counties were a state, the state’s population would be 457,859 and be roughly the size of West Virginia.

The small town of Brownsville, Oregon celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the classic movie “Stand By Me” on Saturday July 23, 2016.

In 1985 Brownsville was turned into a town named Castle Rock and was teaming with film crews, actors and all the excitement of the movie making process. On August 8, 1986 the movie had a limited release at 16 theaters around the country. Today, 30 years later, the fans are more passionate than ever before and yearn to visit the locations of their favorite movie and mingle with others who are just as passionate. “In honor of the 90th Anniversary of the Hollywood Theatre and the 90th Anniversary of Buster Keaton’s classic film, Buster Keaton’s, “The General”, which was shot in Cottage Grove, OR, the Hollywood Theatre and Oregon Film present a state-wide tour of the film with a new live score composed by renowned Portland film composer Mark Orton. (OPB did a short piece on this project which explores Orton’s thoughts and inspiration behind this project.)

It’s a Beautiful Day in Brownsville – “Stand By Me” 30th Anniversary Is Underway!

Brownsville is celebrating today!  “Stand By Me” turns 30 –  “The  anniversary event is featuring a 5K walk/run as a memorial to Ray Brower, interviews with some of the cast & crew (including the train engineer from the trestle scene), a vintage car cruise in and vintage trailer open house, an authentic sock hop in the historic Brownsville gym, an amateur blueberry pie eating contest, a Geocache Challenge, a replica of the tree house and guided walking tours. Congrats to “Portlandia” – Three Emmy Nominations

Screen Shot 2016-07-18 at 11.49.16 AM“Portlandia” was nominated again for Outstanding Comedy Sketch Series, and  also nominated in the Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series category, with Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein, Jonathan Krisel, Graham Wagner and Karey Dornetto , and for Outstanding Production Design for a Variety, Nonfiction, Reality or Real-competition Series – with production designer Schuyler Telleen and set decorator Katherine Isom.

OPB Music’s Latest Road Session – Mimicking Birds – Play At Thompson Mill’s Oregon State Heritage Site

The beautiful and interesting Thompson Mill’s Oregon State Heritage Site played host to the band, Mimicking Birds, in the latest OPB Music’s “Road Sessions” series.

“Thompson’s Mills is a Oregon State Heritage Site in Linn County near the town of Shedd. More than 150 years old, it’s the oldest water-powered grain mill in Oregon, where the waters of Calapooia River drive turbines you can still see running today for demonstrations.

Known for their hushed, ethereal music, Portland band Mimicking Birds play their song “Water Under Burned Bridges” at the mill, for the final video in our Road Sessions series. Historic UO Alumni Filmmakers Receive Grant To Preserve Their Work

 The National Film Preservation Foundation announced their latest group of historic films that will receive funding to preserve them for record. Among them are; the “Luther Cressman Field Work Films” (1938 – 1954), an important documentation of work done by the UO archaeologist, Luther Cressman; and a feature (1953) by UO alumnus, James Blue, that won a Critic’s prize at Cannes (1962).
