Nominees are selected by “committees of film and television critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators. “Mother Of Color” Gets Amazon Prime Deal!

Dawn Jones Redstone‘s #oregonmade Mother of Color” gets nationwide distribution with Amazon Prime!

Dawn (she/her) is an accomplished Oregon filmmaker and an award-winning queer, Mexican American writer/director. She directed multiple short films including the acclaimed ‘Sista in the Brotherhood” distributed by Collective Eye. Her narratives often feature women of color (in front and behind the camera) and she explores themes of resistance and feminism. Dawn has been the recipient of multiple grants and awards in Oregon, including from; the Regional Arts and Culture Council, Portland Art Museum, Seeding Justice, Oregon Futures Lab, Story Changes Culture, and Prosper Portland. The annual Location Guide‘s Makers & Shakers Awards are awarded to a production trade association, member organization, or company that has benefited the community and expanded the local talent and skills pool of the creative screen industries. Community Storytelling Fellowship Call for Proposals

Oregon Humanities is now accepting proposals for our Community Storytelling Fellowship. We’re looking for people who belong to communities that are underrepresented in Oregon media to share stories from those communities in our magazine and other publications in 2024.

Vampira: Glamour Ghoul

The Oregon Film Museum and the Astoria International Film Festival present an evening of Vampira on Friday, October 27 at the Liberty Theater in Astoria.  It is a free event beginning at 7:00 pm, doors open at 6:00 pm.

Actress Maila Nurmi—better known as her alter-ego, TV’s original horror host Vampira—lived in Astoria from 1939-1941, graduating from high school here and working to save enough money to try her hand at Hollywood fame. Before starring in her character’s eponymously-named Vampira Show or in director Ed Wood’s cult-classic Plan 9 from Outer Space, Maila passed her days in Astoria dancing the jitterbug and driving the local bookmobile. Oregon Film Museum to Present “Selig Award”

The Oregon Film Museum seeks to inspire the next generation of storytellers in Oregon.  We are excited to announce the “Oregon Film Museum Selig Award” that will be presented annually to a young Oregonian involved in the local film industry.

Partnering with “Outside the Frame” we have identified the first recipient: Fevan “Rose” Solomon.

Solomon will receive the award and a small stipend on November 10 at the Liberty Theater in Astoria at 7:00 pm.  Solomon’s documentary film “Stories I’ve Told the Stars” will be screened followed by a Q & A with the filmmaker.  Continue reading... “Oregon Film Museum to Present “Selig Award””

The Real Goonies? The True Quest for Fabled Treasure on the Oregon Coast

There has long been speculation that there may be some hidden treasure tucked away on the rocky Oregon coast, but did this rumor inspire the beloved Oregon movie, “The Goonies”? A new documentary, “The True Quest for Fabled Treasure on the Oregon Coast” explores the 2022 discovery of timbers from the Santo Cristo de Burgos shipwreck and the legend that might have been an inspiration for the film.
