Goonies Weekend Celebrates 40 Years of #OregonMade Classic
June 7 is officially “Goonies Day” in Astoria and that day will anchor an entire weekend of celebrations for the film’s 40th anniversary called “Goonies Weekend.”
“The Goonies,” produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Richard Donner, was released in 1985. For Astoria, where the film was set and where much of it was shot, Goonies-related tourism has long been touted as an important component of the local economy. Anniversary celebrations have drawn reliable out-of-town crowds ever since the 25th anniversary and Goonies merchandise sprouts up regularly at local shops. With Covid-19 restrictions still in place, Goonies day decided to go 
In 2010 Mayor Willis Van Dusen declared June 7 to be “Goonies Day” to commemorate the release of the film back in 1985. 
Every year around this time we take a moment to reflect on the work we do and why we do it.
Oregon has a rich history in film production, with over 700 films shot in locations across the state, including favorites such as “The Goonies,” “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” “Stand by Me,” “Twilight” and so many more. But the value of a film set doesn’t end when production wraps.
Destination Film Guide recently published an article by our own Jane Ridley that talks about the economic power of Film Tourism and how Oregon Film, in conjunction with partners like SetJetters and local jurisdictions, is using its development of the Oregon Film Trail to highlight Oregon’s many historical sites for iconic movies like Stand By Me, Homeward Bound, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Twilight and The Goonies to bring film tourists, or set jetters, to all parts of our state. 
A street kid gets caught vandalizing (in Portland or Astoria or even Seattle, it’s never actually clear except for the SuperSonics baseball cap) and sent to clean up his creative tagging at the fish tanks at (thanks to creative editing) Oaks Park. It is here that Jesse befriends the eponymous angry-at-his-captivity Orca and the rest is cinematic history – right on up thru the Killer Whale in a car wash and on to Willy’s dramatic flying escape over the breakwater at Hammond Marina in Warrenton.
