Two Oregon companies, LAIKA and Bent Image Lab picked up nominations for the 42nd Annual Annie Awards.  (Bent Image Lab garnered a nomination for  “Polariffic” (Hallmark) in the Best Animated Special Production category, and Laika’s “The Boxtrolls” picked up 13 nominations, including Best Animated Feature.)   Laika was awarded two Annies for Best Production Design and Best Voice Acting (Ben Kingsley as Archibald Snatcher).  “The Boxtrolls” is also nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscar’s next month. Positive Opening Box Office For “The Boxtrolls” And Laika’s Continued Partnership With Focus Features

Laika’s third big, stop motion feature, “The Box Trolls” (Laika and Focus Features) had some positive nationwide opening numbers, $17.3 million gross, Laika’s biggest opening yet.   Laika President,Travis Knight, and Focus Features CEO, Paul Schlessel announced late last week that they will continue to work together for three more projects.

Laika’s “The Boxtrolls” Screens At 71st Venice Film Festival

Laika’s  third big, stop motion feature, “The Box Trolls”  screened out of competition last Sunday at the 71st Venice Film Festival and in theatres later this month, (September 26th).

Based on Alan Snow’s “Here Be Monsters”, the cardboard wearing Boxtrolls live beneath the streets of Cheesborough, only coming up from underground at night to collect items they need to build machines for their underground city. Ben Kinglsey, Elle Fanning, Toni Collette, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Richard Ayoade all star in feature, with Anthony Stacchi (“Open Season”) and Graham Annabel (story artist on “Coraline” and “ParaNorman“) co-directing, and produced by Travis Knight and David Ichioka.  Continue reading... “Laika’s “The Boxtrolls” Screens At 71st Venice Film Festival”

LAIKA Acquires Rights to Develop Colin Meloy’s and Carson Ellis’ “Wildwood”

Today LAIKA announced it has optioned the film rights to the recently released novel “Wildwood”.  The novel was written by Decemberists front man Colin Meloy with the book illustrations done by Carson Ellis.  This announcement is more proof that Oregon’s creative industry is in full swing on many different levels and now those entities are collaborating.  The novel is the first of a planned three books set in an alternative version of Portland focusing on Forest Park.  LAIKA’s announcement appeared in this Variety article.
