September is a Month Full of Creative Festivals in Portland With New Ideas and New Collaborations

Almost everyone knows that Oregon’s weather is at its best in the months of July, August and September and as a result there are many events programmed in those months designed to get people outside and also designed to get people to travel to our great state.  In September there are wall to wall events now programmed for anyone that enjoys good music, cutting edge contemporary art, innovative and creative thinking, and of course world class food and drink.  These cluster of events are all on the rise and worthy of a quick breakdown so you don’t miss a great experience here in Oregon.

Call for Entries: 39th Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival

The 39th Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival continues the Film Center’s tradition of bringing moving image artists of the Northwest together to share ideas, discover resources, inspire, be inspired, and to showcase their finest work to greater audiences. Submit your recent work for consideration!

The entry deadline is Monday, August 1 (postmark) and the Festival runs November 9-17. Entries are judged by a prominent filmmaker, curator, or critic who determines the Festival awards. Past judges have included Gus Van Sant, Matt Groening, and Todd Haynes.

Weiden + Kennedy Takes Home Awards at this years Cannes Lion Festival of Creativity

Portland based ad agency Weiden + Kennedy took home several awards at this year’s Cannes Lion International Festival of Creativity.  Most notably W+K won this year’s Advertising Agengy of the Year at the event. As reported in this week’s Oregonian,

Dan Wieden, co-founder and global executive creative director, also received the Lion of St. Mark award, given for “long and outstanding contribution to creativity and communications.”

W+K’s work with leading brands like Nike, Coca-Cola, Heineken, Old Spice and a host of others continues to lead the pack with innovative campaigns and engaging content.

Intel, Portland Incubator Experiment, W+K, and Oregon Film come together for a “Narrative Hack”

Isn’t it fun talking about “the future”?  Well this past spring Intel Labs, the Portland Incubator Experiment, Weiden + Kennedy and the Governor’s Office of Film and Television decided to spend a weekend in May looking into the future of narrative storytelling.  We reached out to 16 different creative professionals with their own unique expertise from both Oregon and around the country to spend a Saturday in W+K’s offices and literally dream up a new form of storytelling.

FACEOUT STUDIO HOLDS SUCCESSFUL CASTING CALL EVENT FOR EMERGING TALENT

Bend, OR – June 25, 2012. Faceout Studio recently held a successful casting call event introducing emerging local talent to the various print and film related opportunities the studio has to offer.  The energy was extremely positive as the packed out house learned more about how to be cast for book covers and short film projects. Shot in one awesome in Portland, the new single by Portland’s “Worth” from his debut solo release “Six Foot Soul” due in August. Worth has been rocking the Portland scene for the last five years as the front man for NIAYH (Now Is All You Have) and is currently touring Europe to promote his new album. “Caught Up” is the first single and got a lot of people dancing during the Last Thursday street fest, check it out!

Summer is for Shooting

The Northwest Film Center School of Film is offering an array of classes geared toward getting you out in the sun and working on your cinematography.

From documentary to narrative films, time-lapse to Super-8 there’s a little something for everyone. Classes and workshops are a great opportunity to brush up on basics, learn some new tricks, and network with others working on local productions.

The School of Film welcomes a variety of experience levels and no applications are necessary.

On Monday I made the trip down to Southern Oregon for a few meetings, events and a nice meal or two! I was asked by NBC Affiliate KOBI to come in and talk about the recent film and video success in Oregon. OMPA Presents Speed Networking on Thursday, June 28

The Oregon Media Production Association is excited to present “Schmooze It or Lose It,” an exciting speed networking session on July 28 at the Red Lion Convention Center (in the Windows Lounge) from 6-8pm. Meet new potential collaborators in the media production industry (film, TV, commercial, new media, interactive, etc.) and re-connect with past ones at this fun and productive event.
