Every year Movie Maker Magazine surveys independent filmmakers in the united states to find the best cities live and work in. They focus on a number of criteria; good cost of living, employment opportunities, quality of life, affordable home prices and of course financial incentives, availability of locations and quantity of crew and vendors.

On November 29th, local Portland-based filmmakers, the Brothers Freeman, commence principle photography on CELL COUNT, the second of two feature films made back to back under the i-OPIF incentive program this fall from their production company Polluted Pictures in association with Wooden Frame Productions.
The film, which was written and directed by Todd E. Freeman will be shot entirely on location in Portland for 3 weeks. It stars an all local cast including Robert McKeehen, Haley Talbot, Ted Rooney, Judd Eustice, Christopher Toyne, Suzanne Owens-Duval, Eric Newsome, Sean McGrath, John Breen. This past week there were two news articles of note; one in the Eugene Register Guard and the other in the Ashland Daily Tidings. In Eugene writer Mark Baker profiled Katherine Wilson’s efforts to start a film museum in the Willamette Valley. One of the greatest resources we as filmmakers have today are DVD’s. I can’t tell you how much they come in handy. I myself have over 200 flicks that range from Noir to Horror, Foreign to Family, or Musical to Mayhem, but no matter what the material is, I find that there is a lesson I can learn from each of them and it’s called COMMENTARIES!!!! OMPA member Frank DiMarco has donated his well-traveled “Making Movies” exhibit to Film Action Oregon. http://www.filmactionoregon.org/ The collection of framed black and white images depict recent filmmaking in Oregon, with emphasis on the individual crafts that go into making a production. Film Action Oregon Artistic Director Richard Beer says, “We are honored that Frank decided to donate this lovely collection to Film Action Oregon. Four filmmakers embarked on a doomed location scout in the forests of the Pacific Northwest. What started as a preliminary scout at the base of the cascades, ended in a bloodbath in the unforgiving wilderness. ‘Evidence of the Sasquatch’ is the film shot during this scouting by the filmmakers. This footage was found and the film was put together chronologically to show what these pour souls experienced in the days leading up to their final moments. Oregon has always been fertile ground for talented writers and many have seen success on the big screen as well. We have Ken Kesey to thank for “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Sometimes a Great Notion”. OSU alum Mike Rich (“Finding Forrester”, “Secretariat”) has written the screenplays to several successful films recently.
