MoveMaker Magazine just released its annual list of Best Places to Live and Work as a Filmmaker and Portland has made the list again. Coming in at #15 (just under our friends and colleagues to the southeast in SLC), Portland stands alone on the list for the PNW.
#OregonMade and Astoria shot SOMETIMES I THINK ABOUT DYING, starring Daisy Ridley, is being released by Oscilloscope Laboratories in the US (it opened theatrically in France on January 10th and will be playing in theaters in Canada, the UK and hopefully lots of other places in the near future) on January 26, but the film will be at theaters locally on February 2nd.
THE LABOR MARKET: Portland film and TV workers put on a free weekend public market and maker fair in Old Town on December 9 and 10.
IATSE Local 488, representing Studio Mechanics (Motion Picture workers) in Oregon, Washington, Northern Idaho, and Montana will host The Labor Market, a holiday event for the general public from 10 am until 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday, December 9 -10 in the Goldsmith Blocks Building on 412 NW Couch Street in Old Town Portland.
POWGirls will be offering an Intro. to Filmmaking workshop as part of their summer programming.
POWGirls (a program of the Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival) offers workshops in video production, cinematography, audio recording, set lighting, digital editing and media literacy for girls and non-binary youth ages 15-19. Our instructors are working media producers who inspire girls to be creative, tech-savvy leaders who will help realize gender equity in the film industry. POWGirls supports all girls in their media education regardless of race, ethnicity, class, religion, ability, sexuality or gender expression.
OMPA’s annual celebratory event of Oregon’s media production industry and toast our award recipients is coming next week. Come enjoy connecting, exchanging ideas and experiences, and exploring new collaborations.

After a two-year pandemic delay, Southern Oregon University has launched its innovative, new, 12-credit spring immersion course called “The Crew Experience.” Student filmmakers spend an entire term learning on location, collaborating under the supervision of faculty and experienced industry mentors on the set of a significant film project designed to emulate the professional working environment.

When in Doubt
A new documentary about the importance of difficult conversations and the benefits of doubt.
The Signal Productions is making a documentary with the aim of helping improve dialogue across ideological divides and strengthening relationships. We are working with one of the authors of How to Have ImpossibleConversations, Peter Boghossian, who will be coaching our documentary subjects to improve their ability to communicate. The film will feature amazing people like Daryl Davis, self-described race reconciliator, who was able to get over 200 people to leave behind hateful organizations like the KKK just through dialogue and by befriending them. Students had to apply and interview for their crew positions and were placed based on the experience, skill levels and portfolios of work they have accumulated in preceding classes.
