Gus Van Sant and James Franco to Screen “My Own Private River”

On September 25 Gus Van Sant and James Franco will be at the Hollywood Theater to screen their film “My Own Private River” which is a re-imagined look at Van Sant’s classic film ‘My Own Private Idaho”.  After their collaboration on “Milk”, Gus shared with Franco the original dailies from the film and the two came up with the idea of re-cutting the film.  For more details on the event go to the Hollywood Theater website.

Local Film “Rid of Me” Secures Distribution with Phase 4

“Rid of Me”, directed, written, and produced by James Westby and Produced by star Katie O’Grady has been acquired by Phase 4 films.  The film has already had great success in several film festivals including the Tribeca Film Festival earlier in the year.  As announced today in Deadline Hollywood the film will get a theatrical release through the deal.  Phase 4 has a wide array of titles in it’s catalog most recently being Kevin Smith’s “Red State”.  No details on the exact release date but the announcement referenced a fall date. Portland Premiere Of “The River Why” To Benefit The River Network

River Network National River Rally (a Portland based national nonprofit since 1998) will kick off with the benefit screening of The River Why on September 9th, 7pm at the Hollywood Theatre.   Actors William Hurt, Zach Gilford (“Friday Night Lights”), Alex Hurt and Producer Kristi Denton Cohen will be on hand before the screening and for a post-film Q&A.

The River Why was shot entirely on location in Oregon and tells the story of 20 year old fly-fishing prodigy, Gus Orviston (Zach Gilford), who, in an act of rebellion, shuns his prior life and family for what he thinks will be a secluded existence of fly fishing heaven on the banks of a beautiful river. Gus Van Sant and James Franco present “Memories of Idaho” at TIFF

Gus Van Sant will be making the trek up to Toronto next month for the Toronto International Film Festival, where he’ll be contributing an installation commemorating the twentieth anniversary of the cult classic “My Own Private Idaho.” Released in 1991, “My Own Private Idaho” stars River Phoenix and Keanu Reeves as young hustlers on the streets of Portland.

In Italy, the idea of American cinema is tightly connected with Hollywood and sensationalist movies where the hero is always handsome and honest and the audience knows that.  By the end of the movie, he will defeat all his enemies who, of course, are ugly and bad.

25th Anniversary of Oregon’s Own “Stand by Me’

25 years ago, on August 8th, a film shot in Oregon was released nationwide in the theatres. It hasn’t stopped playing since. It is currently #175 on IMDB’s top 250 list, above “Avatar” and “Gandhi”. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay from Stephen Kings’ novella “The Body”; the Japanese Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film; and won the Jackie Coogan Youth Award for the cast of River Phoenix, Wil Wheaton, Jerry O’Connell and Corey Feldman.
