It seemed fitting that Fox Searchlight’s “Wild“, special-screened in four Oregon cities the second week in December. The screenings kicked off with the Oregon premiere of the movie at Cinema 21 , Portland. Reese Witherspoon (nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress), Laura Dern, Jean-Marc Vallée , and of course local Portlander and inspiration, Cheryl Strayed, were on hand to introduce the movie to a packed house, as well as an introduction from Tim Williams, Oregon Film’s Executive Director. The Portland area visual effects and animation user group, VFX/PDX, has a special program on tap for the upcoming user group meeting on November 15th. A little something called “Short Film Saturday!” It’s been a prolific year for eye-popping short films in the area, and this show promises an in-depth look behind the scenes at the visual effects and other wizardry from this year’s crop. Headlining will be Toby Froud’s Lesson’s Learned (presented with VFX artists Adam Sager and David Manuel) and Joshua Cox’s Proximity. Fox Searchlight unveiled the #LifeisWILD contest this week as a headliner in promoting Reese Witherspoon‘s WILD. Oregon Film was approached by Fox Searchlight to help put this contest together as an interactive and creative way to bring attention to the movie, and in so doing, the Pacific Crest Trail, and Oregon simultaneously. Oregon Film collaborated with Travel Oregon to pull together a fantastic Grand Prize package of a week long trip to Oregon for the winner and a friend. Roy W. Dean Fall Filmmaker Grant Now Accepting Applications

Applications are now being accepted for the Roy W. Dean Fall Grant. The grant gives filmmakers a chance to get their films going or completed with an award of $2,500 in cash and $30,000 in film products and services. Films can be documentaries, short films, and features and must be unique and contribute to society. Deadline for submission is September 30th, 2014

Producers Irl Davis and Randolph Sellars are proud to announce the upcoming release of “Polly, The Mystery of Bonney Canyon,” the highest production value book trailer ever produced. Book trailers are still relatively new as a media form. Unfortunately, the bulk of them have been made at a glaringly low production quality with cheap graphics, animated stills, and cheesy music.

Eastern Oregon Film Festival is proud to present it’s fifth edition — #EOFF2014. The festival will kick off Thursday, February 20, and run through Saturday, February 22. A decompression gathering with music, skiing, and snowboarding will take place Sunday, February 23 at Anthony Lakes Ski Resort.

The opening night short film is Bernardo Britto’s YEARBOOK, followed by Dave Carroll’s feature documentary, BENDING STEEL. A live Q&A with the filmmakers will take place after the screening. A few months back it was announced that Portland based author Cheryl Strayed’s successful memoir “Wild” was being made into a feature film with Fox Searchlight producing and distributing the film. Reese Witherspoon’s company Pacific Standard originally optioned the theatrical rights. Acclaimed director Jean-Marc Vallée (recently directed “Dallas Buyers Club) is directing. Now with just a few weeks to go before principal photography, it appears that the film will cover more parts of Oregon than any other project of recent memory.
