The Oregon Film Museum and the Astoria International Film Festival present an evening of Vampira on Friday, October 27 at the Liberty Theater in Astoria. It is a free event beginning at 7:00 pm, doors open at 6:00 pm.
Actress Maila Nurmi—better known as her alter-ego, TV’s original horror host Vampira—lived in Astoria from 1939-1941, graduating from high school here and working to save enough money to try her hand at Hollywood fame. Before starring in her character’s eponymously-named Vampira Show or in director Ed Wood’s cult-classic Plan 9 from Outer Space, Maila passed her days in Astoria dancing the jitterbug and driving the local bookmobile. The Oregon Film Museum seeks to inspire the next generation of storytellers in Oregon. We are excited to announce the “Oregon Film Museum Selig Award” that will be presented annually to a young Oregonian involved in the local film industry.
Partnering with “Outside the Frame” we have identified the first recipient: Fevan “Rose” Solomon.

The Portland Art Museum’s film and new media center, PAM CUT // Center for an Untold Tomorrow, is thrilled to announce the opening of the Tomorrow Theater, a new space devoted to expanding what constitutes cinema, art, and multimedia storytelling. The 250-seat Tomorrow Theater will open its doors to the public on November 3, 2023, with programming designed to inspire and surprise audiences and artists no longer content to be contained to a single medium, label, or art form.

A street kid gets caught vandalizing (in Portland or Astoria or even Seattle, it’s never actually clear except for the SuperSonics baseball cap) and sent to clean up his creative tagging at the fish tanks at (thanks to creative editing) Oaks Park. It is here that Jesse befriends the eponymous angry-at-his-captivity Orca and the rest is cinematic history – right on up thru the Killer Whale in a car wash and on to Willy’s dramatic flying escape over the breakwater at Hammond Marina in Warrenton. For the 11th rendition of the Klamath Independent Film Festival, Oregon’s lone film fest that exclusively showcases Made-in-Oregon shorts and feature-length films, over 50 selected films will be presented in-person and online Sept. 22-24.
Organized by Klamath Film, a 501c3 nonprofit that serves as the film liaison office for Klamath County, the festival draws filmmakers and film fans from across the state to Klamath Falls for a three-day celebration of films made across Oregon over the past year. This year’s festival has accepted over 50 films – the most in the festival’s history – necessitating additional online exclusives alongside a full slate of film screenings to be held at the Ross Ragland Theater.
